The river crossing has been filled in by the railroad. They have promised to remove the rocks when they are done with their nearby construction, but for now, it is no more. See this Youtube.com link:

We crossed in late October. Rocks were rough, but doable even with 4runner stock suspension and tires - no issues at all. Depth was maybe 18 inches at the deepest point. But keep in mind, water levels can change quickly in the desert.

The trail overall is beautiful. The Overland Journal GPS tracks are a great place to start your route planning. Overland Routes | The Mojave Road - Expedition Portal

Recommend you do the Mojave Road over 3 days to have time to explore side trails and hikes. Keep an eye on elevation - overnight temperatures get quite low at the higher campsites.

On the last trip, we noticed some increase in trash at campsites - please remember trash bags and pack out what you bring and maybe a little bit of what you find if you have the space.

I just did 4 days on the Mojave road over Thanksgiving. What a great trip, I highly recommended it. We took our time and spent 4 days just getting lost and a few side trips. I had to use 5 of my extra 8 gallons, but we drove out to the sand dunes, and a few other amazing trails. We had a few very windy nights but just kept everything tied down on the tent.

Love the Mojave Road! If you are doing it invest in this book. Gives some great insight and mile by mile notes.

I'm considering taking a couple of weeks and heading out to Mojave/Death Valley from KY this winter just to get away. I need to get my foot in the door out west as the urge to move there has been heavy recently.

Any reason I shouldn't drive this road alone? I've read about it, watched the videos, and have the road and waypoints mapped out. I have what I consider to be plenty of camping and recovery gear.

I wouldn't hesitate to do it alone, just make sure you are prepared with water and the necessary items (like any other trip).

It is a fairly well traveled route, so although sections may be remote, it is not like you could end up stranded in an area nobody passes through. Nothing on the trail is really very challenging.

If you stay on or near the main Mojave road you will come across other drivers. I alway carry an inReach. There is one tough down hill I would not do without a spotter but around the bend you will find any easy road to detour. I did see a couple of cars do it, but they ended back at the detour and headed the same direction. make sure to carry extra gas if you venture off the road and like to see other parts of the Mojave.

I did it once with friends, would not be opposed to going solo now. You will see others.

Confirmed as of March 5 2021, the Afton Canyon crossing of the Mojave is about 6" deep, the base is now crushed rock. Allegedly filled in by UPRR.

I was intending to do the Mohave Trail in a few weeks.
But things have come up and several people are depending (using) my 4runner.
So I'll still be on vacation, but no MT drive.
The east end is a couple dozen miles from my home, so it will happen.
