Did a quick 1 night camping trip just before the dry lake bed on 5/21-5/22. Water crossing was not a problem, even for my friend with a spacer lifted tacoma.

It's nice to know that Union Pacific Railroad has filled in the spot for the water crossing with crushed rock.
I know that it may not make it quite as much fun as not knowing if you are going to make it through, but it probably helps keep erosion down considering how many people cross there every year.
This will be a good trip and test when I finally find a 1999 3rd gen with a V6 and manual trans.

Have gone twice. Most recently, went West to East back in March 2021. The main water crossing was indeed still filled in with aggregate. This is a video of the other crossing. We were trying to just have fun with it. Got snow 2 of the 3 days, frigid and windy nights. 2 4runners, 1 Chevy ZR2 Buffalo, and 1 200-series Land Cruiser.

That doesn't sound optimal! I am mainly going to see trains and possibly some bighorn sheep. I am spending a day and a night there in late Sept on the way back north from Big bear MTB races.

I think the off shoots were closed because of the weather, and the crossing was drained so the work trucks can get to the railroad to do repairs. i think it'll be back to normal in time for your trip.

What are the camping options along the way? It would be fun to drive it in 1 day, but what are the camping options?

Since this thread came back to life, I'll mention that you can camp pretty much anywhere that isn't in the middle of a road. It's nearly all legal. I ended up spending 3 days and 2 nights exploring the westernmost side of the Mojave Road between Afton Canyon and Soda Lake as well as out to Baker in the North and all the way down to Ludlow loosely via Crucero Rd/Broadwell Wash in the south. So many side canyons and old mines to explore. I went last Fall (end of Sept) and was devoured by voracious female horse flies (DO NOT WEAR BLACK - THEY LOVE IT) and covered with bites from No-see-ums (exposed skin - I was wearing t shirt and shorts the whole time). The water crossings were low. I am going back this fall as well. The Rasor Dunes can be fun if you air down. I am into rock hounding and going to visit some public claims near the Cady Mtns for flourite crystals (blue, green) and way-out-there camping. I'm not a real 'gun guy' but def bringing a shotty for peace of mind being older and solo. I would never hurt an animal but the packs of Coyotes that were, uh, vocalizing at me at night was pretty chilling! LOL I love the desert. Can't wait to get back.

I might be driving out to Vegas late, late this year. Really hoping I can get out here then.
