Pennsylvania 4RNR Owners

I'm growing a little bit tired of the current FB groups that I belong too; It seems that many of the trips that we've taken in the past result in a slow moving Jamboree of a mixture of different vehicles with different personalities driving them. Seems like the past few trips have resulted in people babying their rigs, not wanting mud or memory scars on their paint; Afraid to takes light risks and such.

I don't view myself as someone that will purposely bend my rig just to attempt a route; But I also understand that it is a vehicle with a designed purpose to go off the beaten path, so I'm looking for others who would like to accompany me on day trips around the Central Pennsylvania area, as far as Bald Eagle State Forest and further; Or as West as Breezewood.

There are plenty of off-road, non-maintained paths that lead to some great adventures; Doing it alone is fun, but they say you should always brings a friend. I'm local to the Harrisburg, PA area; I've got a free membership to FRO and spend the majority of my evening time checking out new unexplored routes; That and I have a nice list of water-crossings in my area as well.

Would love to hear from those wanting to do the same thing.

I guess if this post gets enough heat; Whenever it works for everyone, but if its just you and I? Perhaps after the 4th of July weekend. I have a few areas that I want to check out just a little west of Raystown Lake: 40.38348683253796, -78.65950876419953

Portage, PA. A YTer 'Jim & Erin Rose' took their 4RNR off on some of the Coal Trails and such a few years ago and I've been meaning to explore out that far. Its well within the drive time from my HOR so it'd be awesome to check out.

Also developing a list of area low-water crossings as they're good for Instagram posts and general vehicular debauchery. But if you have any that you've found yourself, feel free to share!

Stumbling around this morning on the internet; Found this lovely link for anyone in Pennsylvania who is looking for, unpaved, dust-roading adventures.

Preview Unpaved Roads

Though, I'm fairly positive, that this isn't all of them.

No longer in the area, but I grew up running the mountains in the State College area. There are tons of great roads in Centre County and just East. Some are forest roads to fishing access, others are just loops with lots of mud.
Good luck finding others to join you. Pennsylvania has some great scenery.

Definitely, you're not wrong!

Moshannon, Quehanna, Elk, Susquehannock, and Sproul are all right there; But you're right, I'm just hoping someone wants to tag along for adventures; Just gotta pry them out of their comfort zones it seems.

Another Pittsburgher here. I don't get much time for trips these days, but can make arrangements with enough notice.

Offroading is pretty shit around here, haha, so I'm up for a few hours travel time. I spent the day at AOAA on Tuesday and had a great time.

Hey ya'll who is active and lurking this page,

I found some wonderful, cemented, low-water crossings down in Drumore, PA:

39.799575,-76.252565, 39.800648,-76.251305, 39.803390,-76.250775

There are a stupid amount of wild Raspberry bushes that are ripe for the picking; I should've brought more containers I could've easily filled within an hour of walking the road.

Fellow PA resident. The roads in PA are like driving off-road…

Definitely, I can't promise Fall or Winter would be a better option; Its hard for me to plan that far out, but of course, we could always try!

You're not wrong! Haha!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

But I went out exploring this weekend, decided to go up to Rothrock State Forest, the more "Developed" of State Forests. I have to say, spending the majority of that day, running the "paved" trails, I came across only one "Designated Driveable Trail" and that was: Leading Ridge Road.

Leading Ridge Road: 40.64412475203964, -78.00238836769712

It was kinda bumpy, nice and scenic; borders the leading southern edge of Rothrock, so you were often looking into people's backyards where they cleared the entire way up to the road itself; You can tell residents don't like people driving on the road because I moved piles of brush yesterday that residents clipped and threw into the road. Unless they purchase the R/W, I'm fairly positive that it is illegal dumping... But good luck getting DCNR to do anything.

However Greenwood Fire Tower: 40.68157959782755, -77.73856348298506
and Little Flat Fire Tower: 40.75202200081136, -77.75518445528694 are both still up however they cut the first story of stairs down. I was going to attempt the climb, but being by myself, I didn't want to let gravity get the better of me and become bear food; I'd probably attempt if I had another person with... Takers?

IMHO; Rothrock State Forest is boring in terms of off-roading, Poe Valley, Poe Paddy, Bald Eagle, White Mountain, Raymond B. Winter, McConnells Dam, and Little Mountain are all quality tracts of land. While the trails are a little more spread out, there is more than just one (Rothrock only having one.)

I'm looking to do another trip soon, I'd love to go up to Quehanna Wild Area and check out the Nuke Bunkers and Nuke Rocket Testing area; Bet you didn't know that Pennsylvania dabbled in that! Along with that, I found another "Water Crossing" as well on Lost Run Rd: 41.21550157578841, -78.24352160322279

Exploring the Abandoned Nuclear Jet Engine Bunkers in the Quehanna Wild Area

So at some point I'd like to make the trip and get some quality pictures of my rig and others who want to splish-splash through that and whatever else we find!

If you’re venturing into Poe Valley/Paddy, try Treaster and Havice valleys. Not too far away. I can’t promise anything as it’s been about 15 years since I’ve been there. New Lancaster Valley also used to have some cool trails just off the main paved road.

Interesting. My 4Runner is stock so I know I can't go all out but depending on the date(s), I may find myself available to participate and tag along. Only been off-road once but enjoyed the time out there.

There's a reason we normally go to WV/VA and Michigan...PA is not the greatest for off-roading or overlanding.

Treaster, Havice and New Lancaster Valley; From what I've found, don't have many 'thru' trails. Driveable yes, but you often have to do an Austin Power turn at the end to get turned around as they're gated or lead onto someone's property.

Any Experience in Lock Haven, PA Area?
