Easy Trails Near CO Springs/Air Force Academy?

My son (5.5 yr old) asked me to take him off-roading. We'll be at Air Force Academy on Saturday for a karate tournament so I thought we could do a one hour in, have a picnic/rock scramble, then hour out drive, just to give him a small taste.
I want it to be an easy trail for him, fire roads would be just fine.

Any suggestions for something near AFA would be great.

Oh, we live in Centennial, so really anything in between AFA and our house would be great. I looked at Schubarth but that's an hour drive south from AFA just to get to the trailhead.

Edit: Thinking the area around the Dakan trailhead. We can do some tooling around in that area but mostly just do a detoured drive through on the way to Sedona.
I want to get his feet wet and make it enjoyable. Not scary.

Look up Trailsoffroad.com

That site will show you all the trails in every state. There are some you can access for free (I mean by not paying the website), and then there are some which are only included with "full access" which you have to pay for.

Great little resource.

Bunch of easy trails lake George area( bring your fishing poles) or Manitou springs 6 miles west of Co springs. You'll have to drive south a bit from the AFA to get to the exit but lots of mild to moderate trails.
Also the pike National forest has a bunch of trails. Monument has the mount Herman road not really a 4x4 Rd or Rampart range standing rock trail has some challenging sections but 4runner won't have any issues. Goes with out saying when you are with your little one don't take any hard or even unsure lines specially since you are by your selves.. Go slow keep it in low and have a blast.

I totally get where you're coming from. My son is around the same age, and we love easy trails, too. Last summer, we did the Santa Fe Regional Trail near AFA. It's super kid-friendly, with wide paths and some cool rocks to explore. Perfect for a quick adventure and a picnic. Also, if you're interested in more info about the Air Force, check out afaho.net. Good luck!

Guide book

You may want to look into getting a copy of the Guide to Colorado Backroads & 4-Wheel Drive Trails, I've got one and it has some really good looking stuff around Colorado Springs. Very detailed and well organized book, though note that this version only covers areas south of I-70.

What's stopping you from buying your favorite things? Your budget and the high prices?
