Looks like you chose the left embankment route and that clay likes to drive the car where it wants without your approval 😆 and sucked you in. Next time get some speed/inertia. Also sticks are amazing depth gauges 🤠

In high school I'd take a stock 4runner and t100 with road tires, no cell phone, no recovery gear, etc., out into the muddiest places I could find in National Forest land. Knowing you aren't prepared definitely adds quite the adrenaline rush.

Definitively! I don't even have phone service period because I'm a forest recluse weirdo. I did get stranded pretty badly a long time ago in the middle of nowhere from busting my power steering cooler line. Relocated that. Talk about a lesson learned 🤠 walked to the highest point a few miles away and finally got a 911 signal and gave coordinates. Tow finally showed up a day later for $500. That's the only bad time I got stranded because a mechanical issue. Part of the adventure I reckon!

Thanks for sharing. I hold Toyotas to high standards, so I'm disappointed that a PS problem could leave me stranded. I didn't know that, I figured the wheel would just be harder to steer.

Well I was on a gnarly trail. I had to get to a more accessible dirt path to even be recovered. After the cooler line leaked out fluid the actual pump started to seize almost killing my engine. I then turned it off to prevent more destruction. Pump needs fluid being belt driven. Fun one!

You are correct and that was the path I took to begin with, but there was a deep washout at the end of it that I couldn’t get past, so I backed up and went left with disastrous results.

FWIW, I commend you for your practicality. All the way back to when I got my first SUV in 2003, I knew that the huge majority of driving would be on the pavement so I got street tires. Today I have Michelin LTX AT2s and for me, they're an excellent blend of on- and off-road performance. I love a great trail but am not into mudding or rock crawling so they're perfect.

Luckily I had my lifted 4x4 pickup with MTs back when gas was cheap but I still learned how expensive those tires get for regular commuting. I would like something with a bit more grip but for now these are good highway tires and that’s 90% of my driving. If I retire this rig to weekend toy use and get an EV for commuting, then I’ll go whole hog overland build with it.

I’d like to get a set of steelies w MT’s. Stack them in the garage and swap them in when wheeling.

Until then, my KO’s have been a great all around tire.

It looks like you were able to open the drivers door and step onto dry ground, and then connect to the rear bumper while standing on dry ground. A self-recovery with a winch would have required you to go knee-deep in the muck. You do what you have to do, but I'd take a GMC pull rather than a swim in the mud.
