Off roading ?'s

Hey all. Been thinking of what I want to do with the T4R. Its an '88, 3.0L, 5 speed, rancho shocks & steering stabilizer, 31x10.5 tires, 15x10.5 wheels. So far I've been kinda satisfied with it. I haven't gotten stuck in the mud and actually had the joy of pulling a Jeep out a couple weeks ago. But I want taller with better travel. I've been looking around for a bit and people seem to say that lifting on the IFS is a bad idea and makes parts wear a lot faster. I don't really feel like doing an SAS right now but just out of curiousity, how hard is it on the 1st Gens?

Also, I've been hearing a little talk of "long travel kits"? What are these? Where can I find them?

I want bigger tires, 33" minimum. 35" desireable. How can you guys help me?

Here's an example of a long travel susp.

So would it truly just be easier to do an SAS? And better? That's what I'm getting from the sounds of it. What axles would be best?

Whether or not a SAS is easier would depend on your skills and tool availability. Cutting and welding is required.

Whether or not it's better would depend on the type of wheeling you intend to do. For hardcore rock crawling a solid axle set-up is stronger, but I've wheeled with a number of people that really thrash the crap out of there trucks in the rocks.
For most other wheeling IFS is just fine.

On a pre-Taco truck a Toyata front axle (79-85) is the common choice for a SAS.

See I'm not planning on doing any serious rock crawling. Just some stuff with friends in Colorado mostly. I'm not wanting to do extreme. I may just keep the IFS. That link you posted, that looks like just the front suspension; what do I do for the rear?
