GMRS radios.

I have a pair of Motorola GMRS radios. These transmit at 1 watt and I have measured the range at 3 miles in flat, open desert.

I see that the Cobra PR-4000 transmits at 3 watts which might give me a range of 5 miles under the same conditions. Has anyone tried the Cobra PR-4000? The PR-4000 also receives NOAA weather alerts.

You could expect 5 mi under those conditions. Any other terrain would reduce range considerably.

My motorola t7200s are supposed to give 5 miles (2 watts). They'll probalby do it in the desert or ocean, but when hiking in a mildly hilly area, they went down to about 1 mile pretty quckly.

Midlands

My cheap -- e.g. 49 bucks at Best Buy -- 3 watt Midlands noticeably outperformed my brother's 1 watt Motorola's -- e.g. well over a mile in very mountainous terrain.
