Lift Question from Returning (rusty) 4x4er

For the last 4 years I have been driving import cars, and got really into modifying S2000's - now I'm coming back to my original love - offroading. Before the Honda's and race cars Tacomas and old Jeeps were my thing, but it's been a while.....and memory does not serve me as well....so,

I'm getting ready to trade in my S2000 on a 2000 4x4 V6 SE 4Runner and want to keep this truck as my beach cruising/daily driving vehicle. I want to put a wide 32 inch tire on and am wondering the best way to get enough clearance for the tires. I would really like to squeeze 33"'s in, but don't feel like messing with suspension lifts.

For a 32" tire, I would think a simple 1 inch - 2 inches of lift should be sufficient, but is it best to add a leaf spring or just do the body lift?

Sorry about the long post - this is my first post on here

For your stated use a body lift would work fine, is inexpensive, and won't affect the ride.

After I made this thread I ran straight to work, and on the ride in I realized how stupid I was with my "Add a leaf" comment - 4Runner's haven't had a leaf set-up since 1995.

Anyway - I appreciate the responses

Another question - I've been looking at tires and the ones I really want are 33 x 12.5" - so what is a safe height adjustment to clear them? Can I get away with a 2.5" Set of Spacers or do I have to go higher?

I really don't want to put a suspension lift on the truck, but my concern really comes in the extra 2 inches of width these tires have - is there anything that can be done with the fenders or front bumper to kill the rub? Those fender flares seem to ruin any thoughts of rolling the fenders (what I had to do with my Tacoma) and spacing the front bumper out might throw off the look of the 4Runner

wants and "can't haves"

P.S. Thanks again for the help everyone

33x12.5's will be abit much and also do you come available in 16's? I thought they only came in 15's and I believe you can't fit 15's so that might be out of the question.

I know you can fit 285/75/16's with a 2.5" lift but that'll require some trimming (i.e. inner fender etc etc, just like lowering a vehicle... same stuff).

285/75/16 is almost equivalent to 33's and that's what most 4runner owners run when they upgrade wheels so that's your best ticket.

Fitting of larger tires can create sometimes difficult problems.

Here are some suggestions to determine just how large a tire you can fit.

The rears usually aren't too much of problem because the wheels don't turn.
I quick eyeball with a ruler will tell you how much clearence you have.

The front is more difficult, since when the wheel turns it also moves backwards and
forwards do to the suspension geometery.

Use the stock tires you have and turn the steering wheel to one extreme and
then the other and measure how much clearence you have to the suspension
components and the fenders.

Take a floor jack and raise your vehicle to the desired lift height and do
the measurements again. You can easily find out the measurements of
your stock tires, write them down, get the measurements from the tires you
want to use and note the difference, Remember that a 1" increase in height
only adds 1/2" to each side of the tire.
The tires you want to use will probably be wider, this means they will hang further
over the edge of the wheels. This could cause rubbing problems on the suspension
components. Some add spacers to move the wheels outward for more clearence,
but this will also cause the wheels to move further forward and backward.

Another part to watch for is that there is a difference in the shoulder height of the
various brands to tire, especially the LT type have square shoulders which also reduce the clearence.

The bottom line is, do your homework and measure before you spend your money,
it might just prevent you from making a costly mistake. Just because someone
says something will work doesn't mean it will.

Yes you can buy 33x12.50's in 16's.

Mainly only the larger tire companies make them though, 16's are generally metic tires, but you can get the 33x 12.50's from BFG, Pro Crap, TSL's etc..

As for 33x1250's on a Runner of that year, at least the spacers and maybe a 1 or 2 inch body lift to be safe and look mean.
