Well, if I tagged along we'd need somebody with a V8 and plenty of tow straps - right now I just have a 2wd 4600ish lb Ford. I've done some of the light stuff in Ogelthorpe, but I stay from the better stuff. My only offroad improvement is some Grabber AT2s with stock 18" wheels (cursed "limited" edition, Ford code for "all kinds of silliness + leather seats that begin to dissolve after 2yrs," only good thing is SYNC).

I'm actually in GA for only part of the time, attending UGA, and I got myself stuck in a vacant lot already in under 5 months time - cost me $250 to get out, and I'm with AAA!
Like TFJ - I'm up for something, but I don't know how my availability will be Jan-May (when I'll be back up there).

BTW - I hear Tiger has been blocked all off with a big berm, rocks and fallen trees (not accidental). I tried searching the Landie forums and I couldn't find any better info than it's "right around Talluah Falls."

I know a guy in Athens with a 4.5" Lifted, nicely outfitted KK (Jeep), he could probably come too, but he's hardly ever available.

All the FS roads will be marked, and the map key tells you what kind of surface they are... sort of, sometimes it says "gravel" when it means to say well-maintained clay.
Also, there are some "trails" that exist, but aren't on the map - for example, my map has a trail that goes for a bit, ends randomly, then starts up again - in reality, the trail just went through a small creek and down the clay road some more - it was still maintained and there was no signage in the area.

Also, if you don't need fullsize maps, you can just use the PDFs of the fullsize maps for free. That can also help you figure out what maps you might want.
can u send a link to the site? im in cherokee county and just did a google but found nothin

GA DOT Maps
There are tabs on the left for viewing "county" maps, and for "map orders."
Enjoy

EDIT - Found this for TENN: Maps
No matter where you live, you can probably find maps by searching google for "county maps *your state*" - look for websites with .gov or .us
Also, going down to the planning department of your local county building might be able to yield some fullsize maps if you can't find a gov link to order them (I couldn't for TENN).

That's a good point, those maps are really busy if you don't know what you're looking for.
All the Forestry roads are marked as "FS *#*" so that helps. I'd say any road marked as "unpaved" could be worth a look. I like to look for places where creeks cross the roads, but that's because I like water crossing in general.
You could also cross reference with other maps and Google Earth, but, again, that takes time and effort, but I like maps so I just need more time.

Problem solved! I found a website called Georgia Overland that has most of the stuff in Georgia already marked. I can tell some stuff is missing, but that's ok. I'd also recommend just looking around at his site because there are updates on a separate link.

The roads are also given a rating system and info if you click on the individual roads on the map, but I would say their rating system is a bit understated because some roads with creek crossings are marked as "3 - SUITABLE FOR PASSENGER CARS."
No matter, that website makes finding Georgia trails much easier. The site operator also notes that if anybody knows legal trails in GA, NW SC, SW NC, SE TENN and NE AL they are welcome to send him some info to be added to the database.

I'm in Macon. RiverRock ORV Park in Milledgeville is the place to go.

If you guys go then count me in. I live in Kennesaw and have been looking for an opportunity to see what the truck can do. It is 2wd so I'd need to be pulled out if i get stuck, only reason i haven't done anything too hard.

I was gonna say that. The Georgia folks on that forum have a pretty active group down there. They are also planning a regional overland rally down there in May or June.

Yeah, I'm not going anywhere. Too many geniuses around here driving the same way they would if there wasn't snow and ice. I saw a guy in a wrangler do a 180 driving down a curved downhill road -crazy stuff.
Then there's also a bunch of even more brilliant guys doing dumb stuff on purpose.

My truck's sitting in its parking spot with a good lot of snow on it, and it'll stay that way until all the ice goes away - which at this rate will be maybe March.
They're also throwing around some salt in the roads, so I'm definitely not going to risk any rust.

Sorry if I sound like a baby to any northerners or westerners, but, first of all, I'm more afraid of the other drivers than anything else, second, I'm from Florida and I've driven in snowy conditions once in a rental in Tahoe - I did fine, but I'm not taking any chances with my truck.
