Airing up after a trail run

Most of you offroaders know the benefit of airing down for trial runs, and various pressures for different types of terrain.

Pending the tire type (LT with different load ranges, size, sidewall height and strenght, thread pattern and sidewall thread, wheel and tire width combo), vehicle weight, etc the pressure will vary, but below a few general ranges:
- beach and soft sand 8-12
- rocks 12-18
- general trail 15-25
- fast high speed trails 18-28

However it also requires you to air up again. In this regard we have received quite a few inquiries from forum members about our compressors.

To help people understand which one to pick for their needs we created a nice description in the vendor section, and just thought it may be good to point people to it.
Overland Warehouse Compressors

Basically a compact unit with very good performance suitable for most people.
Then a HD unit for people who want to air up faster and with large volume tires.

I have used electric compressors to air up but I only use my C02 tank now. Much faster and more convient for me.

CO2 is fast and cheap. You can build a kit for about 120 bucks. The down side is it runs out and cost 10-20 bucks to get refilled.

You can get a cheap Harbor Freight 12 volt pump or a Smitty Built for about $50 to $70. They will work fine but are lower quality. If you want a good 12 volt get a Vivar.

http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=93186

The smitty built is also labeld the MV 50 and costco has a similar version.

VIAIR Corporation - 12 & 24 Volt Air Compressors
Vivar makes about the best 12 volt compressors but you will pay for it.

The one you mentioned may also be a good one, I have not seen one.

CO2 certainly is faster and convenient on the trail side, however depends on the user if they want to sacrifice the space and deal with the fill ups, and weighing the CO2 bottle before a trip to know how much is left.

Thought I might post pictures for people as well, so now you have at least see the pix

At any rate, just wanted to raise the awareness of gettign prepared for trail runs, as I have run into many folks that was not prepared.

The previously mentioned MV50 (sold under several names/models) is a kick ass little pump that's only $50 or so if you shop around.
Just remember, when buying a pump to air up tires, it's not the max PSI that's important, it's the CFM rating.
CO2 is great, you can run air tools with it. If you have an engine driven OBA set up (a converted A/C compressor and a tank) even better. Airing up or running air tools is cake.

To help guys get ready for summer wheeling we are running a special on compressors, see

Memorial Weekend Blowout Sale

No need to shop around! The small compressor is a twin cylinder which keeps the temps down which is a major problem when airing up 4 tires at the end of a hot day on the trail. And its only $45 on sale right now!

And as would be typical I was offroading on the Miller Jeep Trail here in SoCal yesterday when I did this to my brand new BFG KM2

and my CO2 was just about out and my spare needed some air, as did my other tires, after I had finsihed the trail, so fortunately I had my compressor as backup

Moral of the story...

Always carry a full size spare
Always keep check on your CO2 levels
Always carry an air compressor as back up

I know I have seen this before somewhere, but not really sure where. Basically what I'm looking for is a 4 way splitter that is connected to your tires and you have one central point for either inflating or deflating your tires. Plus then after letting it sit for a moment all 4 tires will equalize in pressure.

Has anyone found these, or know where I can find the parts I would need to make these. I know most of what I would need can be found at local hardware stores, but like a 5 way splitter, or something that I can use for the "fill/deflate" port, these parts I'm having a hard time with finding.
