I am located in the Bryan/College Station area, but I have to go up to Dallas to pick up a friend on a Friday and would like to make an off-road trip out of it, we would be willing to spend a few days 2-3 touring and trying out our new stock 4runner.
I was wondering if the LBJ national grass lands had any cool off-road trails, that one could travel along and maybe do some camping on the way??
Does any one have any suggestions for some trails in the area near Dallas (within a few hours of Dallas is OK)or somewhere between Dallas and Houston Austin triangle?? I would like to get away from the crowds and maybe do some (NON-RV) tent camping and I am definitely not looking to go mudding.
LBJ Grasslands is good for camping, but there is not a whole lot in the way of trails. Of course, Bridgeport OHV park is right down the road from there.
There is an established overland route in the Texas hill country, around Mason. The route also extends all the way to Arizona, but thats a bit far for a weekend trip. . Let me know if you are interested.
There is also Gilmer, TX Barnwell Mountain
Jamboree event is hosted there every year and they have cabins for rent or you can tent camp inside the park. Barnwell and Hidden Falls is not recommended for stock lifts, Bridgeport NW OHV would be a good start though, you can camp there right outside the entrance. If you do go to Barnwell or HF make sure you have someone experienced with the trails there with spotting experience.

I would suggest Barnwell Mountain in Gilmer. They have trails for stock to wild and it's a beautiful park to boot with some remote camping spots further back in the park. Just stay off anything with 4 or 5 diamonds and maybe even some of the 3's if you don't have any experience. You should be able to do most anything on the east side of the park and if you gt more adventurous the south side has a few trails that you could do. Don't even bother going to the west side.
Barnwell does have nice remote camping spots but man some of those 3s like Clyde' s Ravine, you need proper tires at least ATs .You can take the blue and black trails, those are general road access.
Here are some pictures from my last trip 2 weeks after the Jamboree event. It rained quite a bit earlier that week BMRA 6/8/19 tag along w/Cenla Off-Road Club - Google Photos
