I'm trying to get back into my football condition. When I was a senior I could bench 240, now yesterday 180 was my max after about a week of conditioning. I'm disappointed in myself but I hope to rectify and improve. I'm making every effort to hit the gym at least 3 times a week.

Hey everybody, this is a bit of a shameless plug, but I figured I'd post this here as it is related: My g/f is a trainer/wellness coordinator, bikini competitor etc and now writes a fitness blog related to training, fitness and a healthy lifestyle. I would love it if some of you checked it out, and/or passed it along to other people (I realize that most of the people on here are dudes, and it is maybe a little more fun for women? Although there are some bikini pics). She's a font of knowledge too, so ask her questions! Fitness MoeJo

As a Family Doctor, I see a lot of guys for their annual physicals. After age 18, I'll usually get a baseline set of labs.

It is not uncommon to find kidney and liver abnormalities in the guys who are taking supplements as an adjunct to their weight lifting routines.

This will not be popular to hear.... but 99% (or more) of these supplements provide only one "benefit" for the folks buying and taking them and that is having less to carry around.... in their wallets.

Some of the energy supplements are ok on an as-needed basis; ie, "I need to stay alert for this defined objective..." but to take these on a regular basis is not healthy. The energy is not yours... its a result of taking a stimulant.

The other major problem is that you have no idea what is in these supplements. You know what is written on the label... that's it. There is no regulation to control what goes into these products since there is no FDA or governing body supervision. Many if not most of the raw ingredients come from outside the US where there are absolutely no controls or regulation.

I had a patient recently who suffered a near fatal arrhythmia (abnormal heart rhythm) as a result of taking an "Herbal Energy Supplement" before working out. It was packaged and sold by a nationally known supplement chain. Subsequent testing confirmed that it contained amphetamine derivatives... I guess speed would make you feel energetic... yeah.

Everyone has a genetic predisposition to have a certain type of body with a certain amount of lean body mass and a certain amount of fat body mass. Some of this is determined by your diet, physical activity and how much adipose tissue (fat) you carried on you as you exited the end stage of puberty. You can tweak these numbers by adjusting your diet and your level of physical activity... to a certain extent.

A healthy, varied diet contains more than enough protein to get all but elite athletes through their day's demand. Adding more just gives your kidneys more work to do. If you're taking in extra protein along with supplements to "accelerate your gains" in the setting of some degree of dehydration (which occurs during any intense workout) you could be putting a significant stress on both renal and hepatic (kidney and liver) systems to the degree that you are causing damage.

I'm not going to even go into steroids...

I know I sound like a pain in the ass Dad... but hey, I am, and a Family Doc so that's what I do.

Take it for what its worth.

My workout is 100 push ups per day, dips, pull-ups and chin-ups along with a daily maintenance ab routine. (and I paddle) No gym and minimal equipment needed.

I hate using weights when working out and try to avoid them at all costs. I mainly use a set of rings and a pull-up bar. Amazing how many different things you can do with just those two things.

I wouldn’t say ALL supplements are bad. Some are good building blocks to help reach your goals. Simple pre work out aids like creatine and arginine as well as a post work out protein shake containing amino acid, glutamine, etc are within reason to someone who pushes hard in the gym and wants to gain strength and mass. That’s all I take alone with a clean diet of proteins and veggies and I’ve made good gains over the years.

I am not saying that all supplements are bad but I am saying that they are unnecessary and provide little, if any benefit. I would suggest that your consistent hard work coupled with your healthy diet (but without the supplements and extra protein) would have yielded the same results.

The other point that is really important to keep in mind is that we have no assurance that what is written on the label is what is actually in the bottle.

I don't think they are "bad" I think they are over hyped. You don't need supplements to gain an edge in the gym. I HIGHLY recommend ALCAT testing to see what food aid or hinder your own personal composition. I have mad better gains and have way more energy simply by eliminating offenders in my diet. Our society is always looking for the magic pill and easy way out

I agree walking into GNC half the products in there are hype and god knows what’s in them. Anyone can be sold on a new products promising results. That’s just our society with get rich quick skeams (in this case get big quick). I think it takes a conscious person to not get sold on all the products they see and know that you get basically everything you need from the right food BUT thats not the average person. That’s why the sport supplement business is an estimated global value of $92 BILLION dollars . I would be lying if I said I myself havent bought into a product a time or two but just takes experience to figure out the majority are placebo.
