Hey bryward, find the IDPA if you can. IPSC has been nothing but a game for the shooters and has bene for teh past 20 years of so. IDPA arose from the shooters who wanted to return back to the roots of combat shooting in a controlled enviroment to enhance the shooters skills and not a stage for unrealistic guns and unrealistic conditions.

Yes, the purpose of IDPA appeals to me much more. Very practical: I'd get to enjoy shooting my gun while improving my chances of surviving a self-defense situation should one present itself (hopefully it never will, but I carry concealed every day just in case).

Might I inquire as to why you're "a Kimber guy..."?
I'm contemplating a 1911 purchase, but with every major manufacturer placing their own model on the market, it can get quite mind-boggling to someone who knows next-to-nothing about 1911's. Thanks.

hey bryward.

take a look at all the higher end 1911-A1. Kimber came out with their high end pistols back in 1995 or so. Kimber was not known as a 1911 maker that long but has garnered some pretty enthusiastic owners.

Depending on your budget, expect to pay $1,200 for a decent factory "custom" job. The word custom is no longer a pistol made by one shop one at a time tightenging slides to frames, polishing frame rails, etc. CNC machining can make incredibiliy tight tolerances and the final fitting can be done by hand. Les Baer makes all his own frames and slides, and his own components excetp for springs. All the parts are match grade. His pistols have ben excepted as the FBI's HRT unit pistols as well as Clint SMith's Thunder Ranch pistols. His Premier II is still considered the gold standard for a high end 1911 Government modle. Even respected top smiths like Ed Brown usees Baer frames and slides in his custom one of a kind works. Les Baer makes no nonsense, no bs social pistols. They are a "bargain" at $1,500+ a pop.

Bill Wilson makes his Wilson Combat 1911, but they are very pricey and not in the same class as Baer. Wilson pistols have never been selected or aproved by any serious law enforcement or spec op agency. Wilson tried to run off CLint Smith Thunder Ranch by sending to Smith an unsolicited pistol then making advertisements sayign this was a Thunder Ranch approved Wilson COmbat pistol. Clint SMith snet some lawyers after Wilson with a cease and desist letter. This was reported in American Handgunner a couple of years ago. Clint chose the Baer pistols wihtout Baer beggin for advertisement so that says a lot abotu Baer products. (not affiliated ,but former owner of a Baer Concept VII---I really miss my pistol and maybe I should not have sold it. SOld it becuase I just don't shoot anymore and turnred the moeny around for some serious fishing reels.)

Smith and Wesson now makes a 1911 that should be close to the original model. Colt still makes the "1991" that is a stock parkerized model which came out in...guess....1911. IF you can find a blue of stainless Colt 1911, consider it.

You cna either start with a decent nicely "custom" Kimber, or start with a Colt 1911 and build it as you go along, or pop for something like a Baer and don't need to do anything more, ever. Either way, you will spenf that much either customizing piece by piece or have it all donew at once all mathcing and all functioning right.

here's my weapon of choice.....

it's small and lightweight and fits very easily in my pocket while at the same time packing a lot of heat. It's been beaten and battered over the years though..

it's just a lighter!

*it was laying around and I couldn't resist

Official T4R "Firearms" thread

Since we lack a good discussion thread on anything firearms related, I figured this would be a fun thread.

Post pics of your collection, discuss carry options, modifications, gun laws... whatever!

Actually as my first question... I'm interested in the m&p line. Either the mp9c or shield. Not sure exactly how often I would carry, but I'd love to go to the range a lot.

shield is about $100 less but the 9c can accept a fullsize mag for 17 rounds. Read that the trigger is better on the shield though. Guess I'll have to try em myself, but who has had experience with both?

I'll get things started.... I don't have anything fancy, but it's been nice to at least get out and shoot. Though I haven't done it since early last year. Can't buy ammo for one of them yet.

First, I love my M&P9 full size.
The compact will accept the full size magazines and there are two grip gap fillers (Smith&Wesson M&P | XGRIP and A&G Magazine Spacer S&W M&P 9/40 Compact to S&W M&P 9/40 Fullsize Black . These are available for other compact guns too. The compact is the same width as the as the full size and still has an accessory rail in front. It also has 3 different size palm swells for different size hands.
The shield is smaller, thinner, lighter but can not accept the double stack mags. The grip is also thinner which may be an issue for bigger hands and does not have a palm swell that could be changed.

If you are looking for a small CC, Shield. If you are looking for a range gun that you can carry and still put a tactical light on for nights at home, Compact.

Thanks . I've now been looking and I want something about the size of a G26... where I could extend the mag if I needed to. G26 looks pretty good actually, but for that matter I'm still curious if the M&P9c is about the same size. Off to research!

Kid, it's a 10/22 with an ATI stock and 25 round mag IIRC.

The Glock 26 is definitely a little smaller in every dimension.

The Glocks are great guns but they feel like a 2x4 in my hand.

The M&Pc is in between (size wise) the 19 and 26.
The Shield is smaller than the 26.

Rounds:
19-double stack 15
23-single stack 10
Compact-double stack 12
Shield-single stack 7 & 8

Definitely not interested in the shield now... not for what I want anyway.

seems like a good battle between either the M&P9c or G26. I remember the 2x4 feeling last time I fired a glock (likely a G19)

9c has a tactical rail, the 26 does not.

My friend has probably 35,000-40,000 rounds thru his full size M&P. And probably 5,000+ since the last cleaning and it's still firing great. (he is pushing the cleaning, hoping to get jams. Great practice, learning to clear jams) (we also load mags with live rounds and shells to get jams as a drill).
