Rebuilding a big ol' American V8

Greetings!

I am in the process of rebuilding the cylinder heads of the 401 cid V8 in my 1962 Buick Electra. I have never done this before, and I have been told that before removing the cylinder heads, you need to get cylinder #1 to top dead center. Is this true? If it is, I need to go out and buy a huge socket.

Thanks!
