Here's the scoop; I loaned a rototiller to a friend. When he returned it, the tiller would not go into the forward tilling mode(it also has a reverse tilling mode). The part is no longer available. So, is there a machinist who can tell me if this can be fixed?

You're going to spend more on custom fabricating a part than you will just buying a new tiller.
Around here there are a lot of little shops that specialize in repairing and selling used mowers and tillers and such. See if you've got the same, maybe a place like that could dig up a used part for you.

I will be getting the friend to pay for it. I spent over a grand for that tiller. I'll be scouring my local shops to see if I can find one. It just pisses me off because I told him to make sure it was completely in gear before going in ass deep.

its up to you of course but if the tiller has A LOT of miles on you may want to consider he chip in 50% to fix or replace it but 100% ... well to me that seems like too much to ask.

Is it just because the edge is chewed up that it won't engage? I'm guessing those teeth aren't the only contact it has to be in drive. I mean re making the whole piece would be a bit of a process for sure (hard to tell from the pic what exactly it looks like), but not terrible you just need someone with a mill and indexing head that could re-cut the splines. Otherwise you could probably take the rough edge off and have it working again, but I'm not making any promises with out seeing the whole picture.
If your really set on fixing it check with the guys on garage journal, there on a few guys on there that may be able to help you out for a few bucks.
If u have a good mig or tig welder you can build up the teeth ends with weld, and carefully trim with a carbide wheel. Be careful on how much heat you apply, and do not qulch it or you will make the part brittle. Have been doing this on torn up drive gears for years, but this is only a temp fix
