Feeding fish?

Okay, i have been cleaning my fish tank for the last 3-4 months. And this is the third time i actually cleaned it. Meaning, i took the fish and put it into a bag. And pour out ALL 5 gallons of water out of the fish tank and actually cleaning it. I know there's no way you clean it EVERY MONTH! My question is, how do you keep your fish tank clean and how many times do you feed them? This is just crazy!

I haven't had an aquarium since I was a kid, but we always used one of the filters that drew water out of the tank, ran it through a charcoal filter and a white fiber filter, then returned the clean water to the tank. Seems like we rarely had to clean the tank because it kept the water much cleaner.

We fed the fish once a day.

My roommate uses a filter. He doesn't take out all the water. It would be pretty inefficient considering its a 55 gal tank. It's a salt water tank too, so he monitors it regularly. Water quality stays high. Rarely has to clean it. Except for the weird algae problem that doesn't seem to go away.

STILL it gets dirty. i used to have 9-10 fish now i end up with 4. i do feed them once a day but i'm thinking of feeding them about 2-3 a week now? i don't know. they crap so much i guess. here's a picture of why i cleaned my fish tank.

Wow, you need a better filtration system. The algea comes from the water not moving, or not moving enough. We have a 100 gallon tank with 1 12" oscar, 4 Jack Dempsy's and a pacostomus. Its crystal clear and we only clean the inside of the glass once in a while. We also have a kick ass filtration system that keeps the water clean and flowing. Get a new pump and filter system. Oh and we feed them everyday with flake food, and we also get them feeder goldfish once in a while. They are meat eaters.

Those look like goldfish in the pic. I know almost nothing about keeping fish but happened to do a little reading recently about goldfish and I believe you need, at the very least, a few gallons of water per fish.

goldfish water gallons "per fish"

Put the above or something similar into Google. You'll have more reading than you can imagine.

when you clean the fish tank, you're not supposed to drain all the water out (25gal and smaller, just impossible for bigger ones.) reason why is that once fresh water is put in, the environment is too much of a change and creates too much stress on the fish, which then causes it to die.

happened to me and ever since i've only been draining 1/2-1/4 of the tank and they've been living ever since.

Freshwater is a breeze with the right equipment;you should try saltwater.
My roomate has a 180 gallon with a 60 gallon sump underneath and he changes out about 20 gallons every few weeks.
