Bug Out Bags

I don't really want to go too much on what you all have in them (but feel free, I'm always open to suggestions) but more of which bag/bags you are actually using.

There are so many companies out there selling 72 hour bags and it's tricky to find a good balance between price and features.

Any thoughts and inputs are more than welcome.

What does an E-5 in the US Navy need a bug out bag for?

Perhaps your family to use ....?

I'd expect any active duty soldier to man his post even if the rest of the civis grab their bags and run to the hills Glenn Beck 'the end is of world is here' style.

Unless of course there are zombies ...

I don't have a bag per se as much as I have stuff organized at the house. I work about an hour from home and I feel my biggest need would be for a GHB. I bicycle commute which is huge as I have several routes home and don't require the freeway. I live in a large city and the quickest way home is the freeway via car. On a bike I'm by myself, I have some things but for the most part will be able to get home.

If at home chances are I'd bug in as I have two young children and the freeways would be clogged. I've got enough here and if I don't I'm a mile from a large river and riparian parkway. If the house was not good to be in we'd hoof it to the river unless it's flooding.

Having things organized is key if we do have to leave. If that's the case I'd grab some backpacking backpacks, load them up and leave.

I've got one of these in each of our vehicles as GHBs and use the larger version as a BUG. That said, I'm not leaving unless there are forced evacuations or I'm on a stretcher.

Depends on how big a bag you need I guess? I mean I have seen BugOut bags as small as backpacks and some as big as a person?

Depends on the use and deployment of the bag. i.e. if its individualized then probably smaller bag roughly as large as a small overhead carry-on that can be rapidly taken. If you're using the bag for your family and friends and as a sort of centralized supply deployment a larger bag with larger provisions that mainly is going to be in a vehicle is probably a better choice.

If you are looking for quality packs look into eberlestock packs, they got all the tacticool look without being made cheap. Plus they come in all the fun colors.

Promotive.com can get you discounts if you sign up with your mil email account, plus discounts on plenty of other brands. Anyone who is serving or has served should sign up

Other good company is GoRuck, pricey but you know its made in the USA, company is owned and ran only by veterans who served a special operations role (mostly SF) But their stuff is top notch and looks awesome.

Or you can rock a camelbak pack, Ive got a handful of them and they all do their job well.

Quite a few forums out there that cater specifically to EDC (every day carry) related items and of course the bags to hold it all.

Milspecmonkey is a great resource when it comes to reviewing bags of all different sizes and types.

Maxpedition makes great stuff and is made in the USA as well. 5.11 is another popular choice.

Ill freely admit to carrying a "murse" and one suggestion I can make is to avoid the "sling" style bags with only one strap. Especially for a BOB which will weigh quite a bit, sling bags will start becoming uncomfortable quickly.

If your leaning toward a "72hr." Type backpack, 5.11's tier system is nice in that you can easily attach some of their smaller bags onto it with the included straps.

Hope you find what your looking for! Also try ebay, I've sold a few bags that just weren't quite what I was hoping for and you can sometimes find some deals.
