NRA Calls Texas Open Carry Protests "Downright Weird" and "Just Not Neighborly"
NRA Calls Texas Open Carry Protests "Downright Weird" and "Just Not Neighborly"
"Let's not mince words, not only is it rare, it's downright weird and certainly not a practical way to go normally about your business while being prepared to defend yourself. To those who are not acquainted with the dubious practice of using public displays of firearms as a means to draw attention to oneself or one's cause, it can be downright scary. It makes folks who might normally be perfectly open-minded about firearms feel uncomfortable and question the motives of pro-gun advocates."
For the NRA, this is an astonishing statement. Admitting that a bunch of people carrying guns in public is scary, and makes even pro-gun people uncomfortable, I mean....that seems to run 100% counter to everything they've said in the past.
For an organization that advocates for things like open carry, and for more people to have and use guns, to suddenly get squeamish when they see what that actually looks like...it makes me wonder what they thought their end game was and what it looked like.

My immediate thought is to liken it to gay rights. It's an odd comparison, but hear me out lol.
Gay rights advocates want the gay community to be accepted as normal people and get the same rights as heterosexuals. Many of them see over-the-top pride parades as distasteful and harmful to their cause. A bunch of men walking down the street in arse-less chaps, whipping their banana hammocks around isn't going to make gay people seem like "normal" people.
Likewise, a bunch of people getting together and brandishing their firearms is going to scare a lot of people. The NRA, like reasonable gay rights advocates, are put off by the excessive display. It doesn't reflect upon the majority of gun owners who are actually "normal" people.

It's no different than any other group that wants acceptance. They want to shove their views or ideas in everyone's face to prove their point. I am obviously very pro gun but I will never open carry nor will I ever encourage open carry. I will especially never carry a long gun out in public as a demonstration to prove my point. Those knuckle heads are asking for trouble and it can lead to a dangerous path that can backfire in their face if anything ever happens.

Couldn't agree more with both of you. Very pro-gun as well and love VA's laws but just because you can do a thing doesn't necessarily mean you should do a thing. With guns-rights being such a politically charged issue right now it just doesn't seem the best way to win over the fence-sitters.
Open carry is legal here as well, can't say I have or ever will do it, short of at the range. However, I respect the rights of those that do and don't see a real problem with the folks I occasionally see with a OWB holster on their hip, but carrying a long-gun to Chipotle is just ramming that right down others throats and doesn't do much to further all the other gun owners cause.

I'm sorry. You're new I guess, so let me explain to you how we do things around here. First, somebody posts something about gun control (for or against), and then ndcent trolls the **** out of the gun nuts and we all dogpile the shit out of him until everybody gets bored, then things are quiet until the next thread. That's how it works.
We certainly don't ever post reasonable shit like you just did. You're completely off the reservation with that sort of well-thought-out response, and we just can't have that sort of thing around here. Please do your best not to post this kind of crap in the future.

Noted. I'll do my best to incite righteous fury as I espouse the glorious utopia that is a gun-free world whilst cleaning my 1911.

I think the thing that bothers many, including myself, is the photos of these guys holding the rifles ready, with their fingers on the lower (but not hovering on the trigger).
The proper way to open carry a rifle is over your back, but when your hand is on the pistol grip, and your finger is not far from the trigger it looks like brandishing.
OC handguns are always holstered, that's the big difference. BTW, OC handgun is not legal in Texas.
I find that OC a handgun in Colorado (big ass revolver) is met with different responses depending on the red state content of the town.

I find Open Carry to be a bit weird myself and I'm all up for gun rights.
I mean don't get me wrong, I'd love to run around dressed up in tactical gear and looking ready to duck and return fire with my guns... but to be that decked out for a burger at the pub seems a bit over the top... even by my typically loose standards in that regard.
At most I'd like to have a weapon holstered in plain sight much like LEO, Private Contractors, and other "professionals" tend to wear. But then again I suppose that might be too subtle for most people? LoL
