Wife's 06 LGT started misfiring a couple of years ago - which was why we purchased the 4Runner. I did all I could troubleshooting it and had pretty much decided it was valves, rings or much worse. Finally took it to a shop to have it diagnosed and they confirmed my fears. No compression in cylinder 1 and suspected rings or head problems. Anywhere from $3-5000 to fix it - no thanks; not for a car that's only worth $7-8000 at best.

Anyway, does anyone have any suggestions on how I could get rid of it? I figure my options are to sell it as scrap, put it up for sale hoping someone will buy it for parts, or part it out. Any other ideas?

Those cars are pretty reliable, other than the head gasket issue, right? And isn't there a fix for that, better aftermarket gaskets or something?

You're not going to get much out of it by selling it in it's current condition. If you just want to get as much money as you can out of it, buy a junkyard motor, swap it in yourself, and list it for the $8000 that you think it's worth. Try and sell it with a bad motor and you'll get maybe a quarter of that. Maybe. And that's after you have to put up with five calls a day for every day for two months from guys looking for a quick flip and offering you $500.

I haven't heard of or had any head gasket issues, but, yah the car was pretty reliable - it has 198k on the odometer. The only problems we'd had with it were wheel bearings that gave up before 60k. Got those replaced under warranty. Clutch went out at 120k & installation of a new one was a real pain in the ass. We never really had any engine problems until this.

I've looked around for junk yard motors and have yet to find one nearby. Subarus aren't really popular around here and I really don't have the time, tools, or space to do a swap. I'm prepared to take a significant loss on the value of the car but wanted to maximize what value it has.


UPDATE: I talked to my Dad and he wants me to have it hauled to his house so he can take a stab at it. I have a feeling that we will be pulling the engine ourselves and fixing whatever the problem is...

I forgot I made this thread. FYI, the car is fixed. We pulled the engine and found a burned valve. One valve job later and the car is back on the road.
