I recently turned 40, and needed to challenge myself. It just so happened that my mother in law was in town, and was able to watch our pup while we had a short adventure. We left the house at 2 am, and arrived at the trail head 4 am. By 4:30 we were on the trail, and the first ones on the trail. In all this trail was 6.1 miles one way, and had an elevation gain of 4,898'. Trail conditions were perfect heading up, and even had a couple inches of fresh snow. Things got a little sketchy on the way down once the sun came out.

We were on the summit of South Sister by 9:30, and the first ones to the summit. Not a bad way to spend your 40th.

Have you considered the Garmin inReach mini unit? I got one not too long ago and its turned into my favorite piece of saftey / communications equipment.

I am also a licenced ham radio person, but this device just takes saftey coms to a another level, plus it's affordable all things considered.

$15 / month for what is basically a satellite 2-way pager / communicator. I'm impressed how well it works. I did get the mini, and you can text message though your cell phone using the inReach as a sat modem over Bluetooth. For an extra $18 for the year, you can get 100k in search and rescue coverage in case you ever had a serious emergency.
