GM recalling vehicles back to 1997!

I thought this was quite hilarious, why would you recall a valve cover gasket from 1997?

I don't imagine any other manufacturer doing that.

Even if it was 'good' back then, it'd probably be bad by now -- Even on the 4runner!

GM recalling 1.4M cars; oil leaks can cause engine fires

Over time, a valve cover gasket can degrade, allowing oil to seep out. Under hard braking, oil drops can fall onto the exhaust manifold and catch fire. Flames can spread to a plastic spark plug wire channel and the rest of the engine.

GM says it has reports of 19 minor injuries in fires caused by the cars. In 2008, a GM spokeswoman said the cars were responsible for 267 fires, including at least 17 that burned structures.

I have a pending recall on my 1993 Jeep Cherokee to install a heavy duty rated tow hitch because rear end collisions can cause the gas tank to rupture and catch fire/explode.
 
My dad has a Pontiac Grand prix GTP, its leaking bad from the valve covers. Guess he gets a free repair.
 
I thought it was normal for GM engines to leak oil

Yeah I saw some old Buicks and Chevy Luminas in the recall. Lucky for them, those cars were so badly made, there not many left around for them to fix! Imagine if it were Accords or Camrys?

I was quoting another member's post about volume. The corollary of volume would be cost. In this case, high volume, lower cost for gaskets. My post was contrary in that frames are low volume and high cost. Try and keep up.

No the post had nothing about volume. The list said lucky there is enough around to be fixed. Try and keep up douche bag. No need to get all huffy puffy. It's so hard to have a conversation on the Internet with out someone trying to act tough

The obvious implication in the first quoted post is that there are a LOT of Camrys and Accords still floating around. In this case, a lot, would be referring to volume. You resort to name calling and I'm huffy? Lmao, enjoy your night.

So for a 70 dollar set of gaskets and at most 2 hours of labor Government Motors will do this recall. Take about trying to save face.

Dang someone's a little pretentious now aren't we? Must be a 5th gen guy.

Anyways, GM should just recall the whole vehicle, they're poorly designed from the start.
