2009 BMW R1200GS Adventure

Started with dirt bikes as a young teenager (1978 Yamaha MX100, 1988 Kawasaki KX125). Raced some hare scrambles (badly) but enjoyed it.

Went about 10 years without one, and when I finally had the means and the time, I got the BMW to camp across the mountain west. Iron-butted twice, once around lake Superior, and a second time from Billings, MT back to KC. Fell down a mountain with it, broke several ribs, busted a hole in the valve cover, dumped 2 qts of oil out, 46 miles from the nearest humanity in nowhere, WY. Disassembled it on the trail, patched it with JB Weld Steel Stick, duct-taped my ribs together, rode gingerly for 46 miles to a NAPA store for a few quarts of oil, and continued camping for another week.

Motorcycle camping and broken ribs are not highly recommended. She's been a good stead otherwise, carried me 45,000 miles of dirt roads and hours of midwestern highway in-between.

There's something about motorcycle travel; the temperature changes, the wind, the smells, the heat change when the sun dips behind clouds. It's more visceral than riding in a car. You're IN the trip, not just driving Through the trip. It has lead me to locations I never would have traveled otherwise.

I'm older now. Packing everything in 3 cubic feet, setting up camp, freezing because of the small sleeping back to fit on the motorcycle that I brought, and tearing down camp and riding off again, plus the aches and pains, doesn't carry the romance it once had.

But the love of destinations just around the bend, just over the next hill, a place I haven't seen yet, is an allure I hope to continue to pursue in my 4Runner. From 2 wheels to 4, the balance is a bit easier, the beer better transported, the food is better, and the setup and tear-down is faster.

All said, the 2-wheels will always have a place in my garage.

I've been working on a CB350 that I pulled out of a field in 2014. It was a locked up rusted out basket case:

I'm closing in on a finished product, but still plenty left to do:

It was a total restoration of every single part of the entire motorcycle.

so I ride

since 75 - Suzuki TS250, Suzuki T350, Suzuki GS750 (race it in CO), Suzuki PE 175, Kawasaki ZZR1200, Yamaha FJR, KTM 250 EXC, KTM 300 EXC.

But I've gotten old - currently I have a Suzuki DRZ 400 for the jeep roads and a BMW R1200RT
KTMTalk.com

for the road. Posted this a couple months ago on another forum ----------

It's been a very hard summer and I got out on my BMW for the first ride of the season. Pathetic I know.

Went riding on H92, the north rim of the Black Canyon, west of Gunnison. A great road, not much traffic, no cops that I've ever seen, very windy road. Kind of like the Tail of the Dragon I guess.

I'm rolling along a a mellow pace just slightly above the speed limit.

- left hand turn coming up, trees block my view of the corner middle
- I spot 2 guys riding standard mcs (not cruisers or tourers or dirt bikes) headed my way, coming into the turn
- I see them for maybe 1/2 a second before the disappear behind the trees at the corner but I note that they're riding very aggressively and their body positioning seems a little off - In my mind I think "they're just going too fast for their capabilities"
- I've got just a second to think about it but I slow down quite a bit and move to the far right of the lane
- the 2 riders burst out from behind the trees
- - - the first one is about 2 feet into my lane and missed me by 5 feet
- - - the second one is about 5 feet into my lane and missed me by 2 feet
- - - this is at a closing velocity of maybe 70mph

I've been riding on and off for more than 40 years. NEVER had anyone do this, let alone another bike.

Could easily have been killed, certainly would have been severely injured.

I don't care if you kill yourself through your own stupidity, but don't take me with you.

------------
I love riding but this one really took the fun out of it for a while.

I’ve been down a few times. Even when wearing filezilla uc browser rufus gear, it still hurt lol. I try to keep on a leash on the throttle now a days. Too many stupid drivers, and i’ve lost too many friends in the past. Now, it’s just therapy for the soul.

Broke my Ulna on my bike 2 months ago, which is part of the reason I ended up pulling the trigger on a 2000 Limited. I had plenty of time to do the research and track one down finally. I love dirt bike riding; the extreme enduro stuff for sure.
