If you want to know the hardness of wood species, check out the Janka Hardness Test
To the OP..
I bought the same floor but different color from H.D.
With any project like that, buy an extra 10%..
Sure some no tongue on them, some were not straight, and very few were different shade then others. But all in all I'd buy more of the same in a heartbeat..
I have pictures on my computer at home, I'll see if I can post some after work.
Any questionable pieces I put in a closet or somewhere you don't notice.
If and when you get them, make sure you put them in the living space where they are going for a few days so they get acclimated to the space.
Open the boxes up and look through them all, spread them out and check them.
Put some tar paper down first. (I think it's #15)(not #30)
Try to get the same batch numbers on all the boxes too.
Save a box or 2 and what you don't end up using, should be able to be returned.. Myself returned one whole box..

With one kind of wood or what?
My understanding they just get what's left over from other companies..

Either Lumber Liq, or Floors 4 Less if they are around you. I'm looking to do a section of our lower level and those two places are where I found the best deal.

You get what you pay for. We are building a new house and we just dropped a small fortune on some Smoke 5" wide Oak 3/4" engineered hardwood flooring. I think it's American made actually... "Sawmill Oak from Savannah Hardwood Flooring." Looks nice and is quite durable.
$5 sq/ft isn't cheap. I don't see why Home Depot would stock crap. They often carry good brands from what I've seen.

That's for the Chinese made laminate, not any hardwood. They also got sued by the U.S. Government for selling wood from a Russian forest where endangered animals live.
I've thought about using Lumber Liquidators but they will not take back any extra boxes you have; Home Depot will.
I have Home Depot Tarkett Click oak in my beach house. They don't stock that particular product any more but it is fantastic. It was prefinished and easy to install. It looks like traditional flooring - no bevels. It has been down ten years and there are NO scratches. I have a lab and kids (now teenagers). It was only about $4.99 a square foot.
The traditional oak floor in my regular house, finished after installation, has plenty of scratches.

"A new report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has put the spotlight again on some flooring sold by Lumber Liquidators due to potential health risks. The company came under fire last year after some of its products sourced from China were found to have elevated formaldehyde levels.
But the CDC's new report on Monday suggests the risk may be higher than previously estimated."

We did a major renovation on our 1963 brick bungalow, a few years ago.
Hickory hardwood, 6" Wide Plank flooring
a) ripped out all the old oak and vinyl flooring, down to the original sub floor
b) glued & screwed new plywood over top the original nailed down 1/2" plywood
c) under porcelain tile, used 3/4" thick plywood
d) under 3/4" thick hardwood, used 3/8" thick plywood
^^ Ensures both floor are flush, with each other / no transition strip.
e) went with Hickory 3/4x6" wide plank T&G unfinished flooring by 4.5 ft. long (on average)
^^ Hickory is 45% denser than oak
f) rented sander
g) oil stained 2x and clear coated with urethane 3x / using a lamb bonnet
TV Mantel
a) 2" thick saw mill white oak, was saved from family farm / planks 60 years old...ends cut with 1968 Pioneer chainsaw
b) side boards are milled pine
c) stone slate is man made, and 1/3 lighter than real stone / helps keep floors level
Custom Door Jams, in Craftsman style
- combination of White Maple / Cherry / Cedar / Black Walnut
Doberman Memorial Wall @ end of hallway
Sun-room in our previous house / my design.
- Home Depot vinyl flooring, was inexpensive
- but we splurged on the cedar ceiling & in-house made natural trim
- 4x7 ft commercial bronzed, double pane windows / all bought used

My parents redid their flooring with flooring from Costco. I forget what it was; but it came out very nice and held up great over the past five years.
So that's another option if you're looking.

I just redid our kitchen and bathroom with the vinyl flooring from home depot. Wasn't looking to break the bank since we were selling.
Honestly it looks fine but if I was keeping the house I would of went with real wood or tile.
I would suggest a cutter if you are doing a lot. I went with the knife method and my hands were killing me halfway through.
