Have been into Benchmade the past three months. Lost my Spyderco years ago (don't even remember the model) and my last Kershaw was a cheap piece of junk that couldn't hold an edge. I also pre-ordered the new Benchmade 565 Mini Freek.

Mini Loco

Mini Griptilian

I really like the Ultratechs. They've been on sale over Christmas and I snagged two.

Benchmade 565 Mini Freek

Just to keep this thread going.

Pre-ordered and received this new model from Benchmade last week as a first production (indicated on the blade but doesn't really hold any significant extra value, it's still mass produced).

Blade Steel: CPM-S30V (58-60 HRC)
Blade Length: 3.00" (7.62cm)
Blade Thickness: 0.104" (2.642mm)
Open Length: 7.05" (17.91cm)
Closed Length: 4.05" (10.29cm)
Handle Thickness: 0.59" (14.986mm)
Weight: 2.57oz. (72.86g)
Handle Material: Grivory/Versaflex

Similar to my Mini Griptilian, a tad bigger. The grip is rubbery and tactile, it could be a plus for some and a negative for others. My hands are dry usually so G10 or composite grips can be slippery in casual handling. I like that it has the S30V steel vs the 154CM on the mini grip. Got it for $105.

Maybe it's because it's first production but the action is stickier than my Mini Loco (also first production) and Mini Grip. Hoping it'll break-in and get smoother over time.

I started using knives with S30V and S35V steel a couple years ago. What a huge step forward from the older "standard" steels. A perfect balance for me in regards ability to sharpen and edge holding. Even the 420c was hard if tempered correctly, but does not compare to the edge life on the SV steel. The best part is you can buy a nice folder for in pocket carry for around $50, and a 4" fixed for around $110 not even "On Sale".

Interesting looking flipper but I'm not a big fan of coated blades; usually get chipped and/or make sharpening a pain. Plus for that kind of $ you can get better than D2 steel; I'd really recommend either S30V or S35VN type for equally good edge retention with much better corrosion resistance. Are you specifically looking for a flipper style?

Edit: Happy Birthday by the way.

Official Knives + Discussion Thread

Hey thanks. Yes I like the flippers, and ive never owned an assisted opener - which I think I would like. I will look at those other knives.

I prefer something with a little weight and dont like the mini knives. I like having a handle that I can grip well.

Alcohol + no screwdriver handy. Shit happens, haha.

Is it still $30 for a blade swap?? I'm sure someone could put a tip on it. It used to really bother me, but when it looks like this I don't worry about using it like when it was new.
