Cigarette And Heart Disease/Stroke
Smoking Just One Cigarette a Day Carries Substantial Risks
By Amy Orciari Herman
Edited by Susan Sadoughi, MD, and Richard Saitz, MD, MPH, FACP, DFASAM
Smoking just one cigarette daily is associated with a "much greater than expected" increase in risk for coronary heart disease (CHD) and stroke, researchers conclude in The BMJ.
In a meta-analysis, the researchers analyzed 141 prospective studies examining the association between smoking and CHD or stroke in millions of generally healthy people. Overall, compared with never-smoking, smoking one cigarette daily conferred significantly increased risks for both outcomes. Here are the findings based on the subset of studies that adjusted for multiple confounders (e.g., cholesterol, blood pressure):
- Women who smoked 1 cigarette daily had a 119% increased risk for CHD and a 46% increased risk for stroke.
- Men who smoked 1 cigarette daily had a 74% increased risk for CHD and a 30% increased risk for stroke.
- The risk from smoking 1 cigarette daily was about half that from smoking 20 cigarettes daily.

That degree of increased risk is actually surprising and not what I expected.
It's also a meta study and not peer reviewed, put forth by the BMJ.

Nat'l Academies: E-Cigarettes Less Harmful Than Regular Cigarettes
By Kelly Young
Electronic cigarettes are a safer option than tobacco cigarettes, according to a new report on the public health effects of e-cigarettes by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine.
The writing committee concluded that e-cigarettes contain fewer toxicants, generally show less biological activity, and could serve as a smoking cessation tool. One of the major drawbacks is that once youth start using e-cigarettes, they are more likely to start smoking tobacco cigarettes.
"E-cigarettes cannot be simply categorized as either beneficial or harmful," said committee chair David Eaton in a news release. "In some circumstances, such as their use by non-smoking adolescents and young adults, their adverse effects clearly warrant concern. In other cases, such as when adult smokers use them to quit smoking, they offer an opportunity to reduce smoking-related illness."

I've always been curious as to the difference between your standard cigarette (Marlboro, Camel etc etc) and rolling tobacco. I would assume all of the additives have an additional effect.

I will not be “that guy” because there’s little more irritating than a reformed smoker. But, I quit after 50 years of smoking last August. I tried numerous times over decades and was never successful. You smokers know how it is.
My pulmonologist was astounded that I just quit cold turkey. He knows my history, that my wife smokes, about my history of smoking and failing to quit, that I tried every possible method of quitting over the years.
When I told him I quit he was surprised and asked me how I finally did it.
My reply: “C’mon doc, you disagnosed me with Stage III COPD 2 months ago, irreversible lung disease is pretty good motivation.”
Us smokers know the risks, I wasn’t surprised when diagnosed but it was still a “Damn!” moment.
No lecture, but remember, no e of us are invulnerable.

Good job! Quit cold turkey is the best way per recent research. Cutting down over time to quit does NOT work.

I smoke once or twice like every 2-3 weeks because I actually enjoy everything about it. Usually it's cigarettes but I prefer a pipe. Even at this rate the craving is really apparent, that's how addictive nicotine is. I can totally see how people get hooked if they do it frequently.

Smoking is a very dangerous habit. From cigarettes, indeed, many people have health problems. But not only cigarettes are dangerous for human health. My friend is currently undergoing chemotherapy because he got mesothelioma at his job. I told him to quit this damned job, but he wouldn't listen. Protection measures were not observed and now he has severely undermined his health. I searched the Internet and found him a reliable asbestos lawyer and insist that he go to court with this issue. He has every chance to win the court and get compensation. He's a little scared, but I'll go with him to the end. He is dear to me and I do not want to lose a friend because of the negligence of the employer

I have been smoking for more than 2 years and all this time cigarettes affect my mental and physical abilities. I have not smoked for 2 months now and finally feel better. If you are thinking about starting smoking, then believe me it's not worth it.

I smoked for 10 years. But at one point I realized - that’s it, this is the end. And threw it. But addiction does not go anywhere
I heard something about sweets, but it didn’t help me. In the end, I found a solution - paddy power app. I just play once every couple of days and everything is ok

I stopped smoking for over a year. I have hypertension and I owe it to my family to lead a healthy lifestyle.

NON smoker of parents who smoked my entire life
so at the ripe young age of 50, i am already the son of two deceased parents:
here to scare you...
My father died in 2014 of congestive heart failure. in the autopsy, the report noted his lungs were blackened from his 35+ years of smoking. That caused his heart to work at approx 35% of normal capacity. he was 64
My mother died in 2019 of an aortic embolism which ruptured shortly after she had had an operation to try and maintain it. In speaking to the surgeons who worked on her, "what causes this?"
only one thing -- smoking. she was 74
if you can stop...stop. lung cancer isnt the only thing that smoking can kill you with.
