OLED TV's
So I've been working a ton lately and thought I might buy myself something as a reward. Unfortunately I have little to no time to research this stuff as much as I would like to before purchasing so I'm hoping someone knowledgable in this stuff can help me out.
OLED TV's, what are the advantages/disadvantages?
Picture looks amazing on the demo units I've seen but I'm sure there is more to it than that. Do they have issues with image retention? How are they with gaming and screen burn in?
My current main screen is a Panasonic plasma (GT50) I purchased a few years back. I'm still happy with it, but I'd like to get something 4K. All the demo units I've seen have been shown off with 4K content. Do different brands/manufacturers do a better job of scaling up lower resolution content to the 4K screen? Will 720p or 1080p content look significantly better than the plasma I currently have, or do you need 4K content to really see the benefits of OLED?
I've been looking at an LG C7/B7 OLED TV. They've come down a ton in price from what they used to be but its a 2017 model, will there be newer models coming out in the near future?
Any other tips/experiences/advice would be appreciated.

LG B6 here. 65"
When I bought it for $2700 on Black Friday from Crutchfield it was the best rated picture TV (NOT the most expensive by far) for sale in the US.
Today the highest rated is the newer model B7. Wow and only $2500 now at Costco with 2 yr warranty.
Don't fall for the BS marketing out there. If you read the picture quality only reviews the B7 and lineup is the best TV ever reviewed. Nothing Samsung or Panasonic has on the market even comes close. Samsun is pulling a coup de gras on American consumers by using their massive marketing position to push out a lineup of inferior 2018 TVs for higher cost than LG OLED because they can get away with it. All of those endless special features on non OLED are just marketing crap to trick you. In fact the deep technical reviews for most all TVs (google: how to calibrate __ TV) say to disable those features anyways.
The LG OLED I have is just stunning and nothing that is not a true OLED comes even close.
Btw Sony TVs are all the LG OLED B7/C7 panels. Sony does not make OLED, they buy them from LG.
Memorial day and 4th of July will have a good sale. Probably 65" for $2,200 and 55" for $1,300 is my guess. The sales are all controled by the manufacturers. This should be illegal but no states enforce the law. What this means is LG, Samsung etc pick the sale price which is why Best Buy and every vendor has these TVs are same price within $30 nearly every weekend. I chose Crutchfield because Costco didn't carry the LG in late 2017. I chose a store that has great return policy. Frys is probably the worst.
Upscaling ... its upscaling man. Every TV review from most brands says it does a great job. I find that 1080p BluRays look great on the 4k TV. Netflix, Hulu, Amazon all look great also. I don't have cable but I have heard that most 4k TVs don't really look amazing when displaying non HD cable content. Just a warning.
Avsforum .com is like T4R for this stuff. Those guys are hardcore.
My setup:
- LG 65" B6
- 2 12" Klipsch subs
- Bose 301 front channels, Infinity Center
- Harman Kardon AVR-3700 125x7 RMS Receiver
- 3.1 surround only (will upgrade once I get a bigger living room)
- Xbox OneS 4K
- i7 6-core PC with GTX 1080Ti and XBOX controller for occasional true 4K FPS gaming
LG OLED or you will cry yourself to sleep from the regret!

Where it will be is a factor. In a basement with controlled light? Or in an open room with tons of natural light as well as direct light?

Yea that's what I've heard. Others have told me it's the best reviewed TV out there.

The only problem with LG TVs is that as soon as they go out of warranty they either have the power/mobo get fried or the tconn video card. I’ve fixed many of these TVs. The good news is that those parts are cheap and it’s not that hard to replace them.

In the last year? And were they LG?

These TVs were maybe 2-3 years old cuz they were out of warranty at that time but in in the last few months I’ve fixed almost 20 TVs. Most were midrange/cheaper models of LG and Vizio and 1 Samsung. I’ve fixed some of the older LGs that were their nicer line but haven’t done any new(last year or current models) ones. I buy, refurb, and then sell. Poor college student needs extra cash over here.

Bigger is better.
I was pretty much set on getting a 4K OLED a couple months ago and after a lot of research I ended up changing it and bought a Samsung 82" UHD 4K flat panel. I love having a movie theater size screen in front of me every evening. It up-converts 1080 very well and 4K is amazing. I am running a DirecTv Genie 2 with three 4K recievers in the house.
Next is to fill in the pass thru in the wall and wall mount the beast.

I also have an LG B6 65" OLED and love it.
In my experience HD material look much better on my OLED compared to my HD LED. The pure black that an OLED can produce makes everything else pop, it's not subtle.
4K content is just ridiculous.
Here are a few images I took with my iPhone which are a little blurry due to too many IPA's... but you get the idea. You won't be disappointed.

It would have been more appropriate for you to post a screenshot of Star Wars Stormtrooper.

I'm going to wait a few more years. I don't think there's enough 4K content out there right now to make a 4K screen compelling. I'm also concerned about OLED's image retention issues. I believe OLED screens are also prone to color shifting over time because the R/G/B elements "burn out" at different rates.
Plasma TVs all suffered from image retention and burn-in when they were new, but the later models greatly alleviated the issue. I currently have one of the last 50" plasma models LG made. No burn-in at all and it reproduces colors that are much more film-like than any LCD I've ever seen. In a few more years, OLED displays will almost certainly benefit from similar improvements in longevity.

That's why I am filling it in. There is a second entrance to the kitchen.
