Sorry for posting this, but this article: https://www.networkworld.com/article...rtwatches.html
Does anyone understand what the author means? I do not have a clue what he is trying to say. EPIC fail because it does a lot of fitness and medical stuff...but then he does not say what exactly he sees missing...except it SHOULD do more, like solve world hunger??
And this guy is a senior editor.............i guess i am senior editor of this forum for the junk i write!

Yep, I'd rather a mechanical watch all day long. The AW series 4 is very impressive, but from what I gather, it still needs to be tethered to an iphone (which I've said good bye to months ago. I love my S9 plus).
If the AW was a truly independent device, I'd give it some serious thought.

You can always get Samsung Watch. Those are pretty nice too.

Yes, but I don't care for any of them, LOL.
I guess I'll stick with my Seiko Series5 automatic watch.

It seems like a great device functionally, however aesthetically I just couldn't wear it. Too big and awkward looking.

The reviews are in...universally exemplary. I won’t post individual reviews because they all praise Watch 4.

This old article gives me hope and that is why I am holding off. I turn off “RAISE TO WAKE” on my 3 years old Watch and getting decent battery life for now.

Well, i lied...I am going to get Series 4 after all. My wife surprised me and ordered one for me...Space Black 44 with Sport Band...to match my iPhone X of same color.

Camera is plenty good. The ONLY negatives: cheaper feeling (compared to XS; but fine compared to your 6s), less RAM (3GB vs. 4GB), low resolution display (but supposedly still high quality), kinda big with slightly thicker bezels, and no dual lenses.
Tee PLUS of Xr: class leading battery life, superb gaming (if low res display not an issue), cheap to own, amazing A12 chip will be future proof as you get, bright and color accurate display, FaceID, and a great single camera with almost all the features of the XS.
I think that the Xr will be a best seller by far of the line-up.

I find myself in a similar situation. I had already ruled out the XS and XS Max due to the fact that I just don't need that much phone, but I am looking to get into something better. I currently have a 6S and enjoy using my wife's X for taking pictures and watching random videos. I was ready to wait a bit and take a look at the XR when it comes out. Then I found that the X is now $899. I feel like an $899 X is superior to a $749 XR. Meaning, I'm getting enough for my money at a $150 difference. Thoughts?
BTW, I've had my AW3 Nike for a little over a month and love it!

Wow that’s a tough call.
Xr = better main camera than X. Faster processor (way overkill = future proof?). $150 in your pocket...which you can then save and buy Apple Watch Series 4.
X = premium materials (316L stainless steel band). Simply looks better IMHO. Much better display...real HDR/DV display...which makes viewing movies AWESOME! Main camera may not be as good, but it is more flexible (optical zoom) and better Portraits (Xr is pure software). Smaller in size. A11 chip is already class-leading, so, it is not a big deficit to the A12 chip. Maybe better resale value? Lastly, X is the official 10-year anniversary model and “limited edition” in that sense because it is no longer available from Apple.
IF i were you, then i would get X. But if you’re a gamer (e.g. Fortnite), then Xr may be better way to go. Camera is debatable...but if don’t use telephoto zoom or Portrait and if you love camera, then Xr is better.

I appreciate the response. I'm glad that you brought up the new processor, as that's where I thought that the XR would edge out the X. I honestly wouldn't come close to taking advantage of the A11 chip, let alone the A12. Oh yeah, the X is a good looking phone. Front the back, XR looks more like my 6S than the X does. I leaning toward the X.
Reasons that I'm upgrading:
More storage
Better camera
Longer battery life

Am I the only one who thinks all this amazing medical data collected by the Apple Watch 4 is cause for concern? What would happen if the data were ever hacked and it fell into the wrong hands? You think an insurance company wouldn't pay anything to get their hands on it? "Ahh, well Joe Six Pack here has an erratic ticker... Time to jack up his premiums or maybe just kick him to the curb altogether."

Well that is why all health data are encrypted on Watch and on iPhone. Just you.

Give it time... Eventually someone will find a weakness and exploit it. They always do.
