Definitely shows why it fails the second it hits human hands. I've only read Vol. 1. Karl Marx's The Communist Manifesto is a must read on that list.

This book is looking at me from its shelve since last spring, I'm going to read it this winter also:

Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged.

Cormic McCarthy’s, all the pretty horses and the Road we’re both amazing. I’m now on the 4th Harry Potter, goblet of fire. I agree that 1984 and BNW are both great guides to what not do in a civil society. The handmaiden’s tale was another awesome dystopian novel. Glad we’ve got a large group of readers on here.

Did you read the whole thing / finish it? I saw your comment that you read 10+ books in non-linear and parallel operation. Wow, that's different.

Anyways, Jordan Peterson has been taking about this book for for the last two years. You're the first person I've heard first hand that actually is reading it.

So what I think you mean by required reading (correct me if I'm wrong) is that if anyone wants to know the true horrors of where socialism and communism will eventually lead once capitalism is replaced they should read The Gulag Archipelago.

Not hey if you think socialism is great and only want to read things that will reinforce the your existing beliefs about how amazing Marx is then this book is for you.

Yes it was so-so. I can solidly say though that IT is a really really good horror novel and extremely well written.

Yes, I'm at the beginning of book #3 in the unabridged series, currently. I finished #1 and 2 in October. This is the 2nd time I've read through the whole series.

Again, yes. It is the definitive works on what inevitably happens when when governments become communist or socialist. What inevitably happens is is terrible, but that hasn't stopped people from trying it over and over again and millions of people from being murdered as a result...

All the Che T-shirt wearing, Marx spouting, "I'm against fascism, but I'm going to slam you in the face with a bike lock because you don't agree with me" fools should be required to read it.

It should also be required reading for any 101 Political-science class.

Yes, reading that many books at once is odd to most people, I have a very non-linear brain so it works very well for me and I like to read a lot.

This is a side topic as this is a books thread and not TV but I want to give the highest recommendation possible to "The Americans" on FX/Amazon-Prime.

The show takes place around 81-87 as a period show and it is all about spies, murder, communism vs capitolism, American way of life vs. Russian. The acting is amazing and the stories are really good.

If you liked "The Hunt for Red October" and movies where Russians are portrayed as human beings not just faceless enemies then you would probably like this show. The American characters are portrayed very human too.

While not perfect, it is absolutely well done, fun to watch and very smart. I just finished the S6 show finale on Monday night. Very good. Each season is about 10 ep so it really isn't that much to get through and has a real ending to the story.

For me at least this show is the best linear timeline drama series I've watched since Breaking Bad.

Patriotism, politics, relationships, what does it mean to love your country, to serve, to put loyalty above other criteria, how does that affect a person, a relationship, a family. This show was really really good.

It fails for the same reason a true free-market capitalistic system fails. Because humans are unable to handle power without greed and corruption. Most economical systems work on paper and would most likely work in practical use if you incorporated one thing across the board. Humanity. But, this is potentially opening up cans that are now closed.

OP, carry on. A Gentleman in Moscow continues to be good. I doubt I'll be disappointed by it.

I like this TV Show. Poor Martha.
You can create a thread about TVShows. I'm watching Altered Carbon because of this post in this thread:
