Coming up on 65, don't think I want to hump any more boxes around anymore. wife is thinking about another move. Computer, clothes and guns is all I want to box up.

How I love being shipped around the country every three or four years. Talk about waste of tax dollars. Recently moved from ks to ms, and found U-pack cheaper then pods. Not that I have found pods service military towns. I'm the type that has a hard time trusting people and from the horror stories recently about moving companies this year, I went with the pack it myself route. Still ended up with a uhaul trailer,no matter what option I went with over the years.

If you go the movers route, do the research and try to find one with the least complaints. Turns out in a good economy companies are having a hard time finding "trust worthy" employees. Been a bunch of warnings about it.

We just ended up rounding up friend/family to assist us this Friday and a UHaul.

Last time we moved we were going from living with the in laws to now moving a whole damn 3 bedroom house. And hopefully moving again in a couple months if we can sell ours and buy new by summer.

Hoping everything goes smoothly.

nobody cares more for your stuff than you do. If you can swing it i think you should try moving yourself. Have a good road trip out of it with a Uhaul

Did UHaul this past weekend.

Had to make 2 trips with the 17ft truck. The 20ft wouldn't even of made a difference. Still would of needed 2 trips.

In America, you usually get what you pay for. I once packed up all my shit and will never do that again. Get a cheap company and they WILL damage stuff.

So, none of my business and not the question you're asking I confess. but I am curious. Why are you doing this, this way? your post said "I HAVE to move out to sell my house" and move into families house. then buy a house. I just did this... Ok I did it in May. we started looking for a house, found one we liked, made what is called a contingent offer, meaning we'll buy your house assuming we sell ours. Listed our home and it sold in 10 days (YAY) and set the closing for the same day. in this case may 4th (May the 4th be with you) my desire to dress like a Jedi for the closings was strong! anyway, we had the movers move all our sh*t out on 5/3 had a 9:00 am closing selling our house and a 10:30 am closing buying our new house and met the movers at maybe noon to unload our stuff. We simply wired the portion of the proceeds from our home sale that we were using as a down payment. A stressful day and obviously that many variables leaves a lot to go wrong. but it was over quickly (reasonably) So my question is why move out and empty your home to sell it? Most realtors will tell you it's actually easier to sell a home with furniture. I know our Realtor has actually paid to have a house "staged" when empty because it shows better.

Oh and I have never paid anyone else to pack my stuff... that feels creepy. but once boxed up I paid them (Mayflower Movers) to load up their truck which they kept in a secure location overnight and then drive it to the new home and unload it. then we got to the business of unpacking ourselves. the cost of the overnight was "included" in the cost of loading delivery and unloading. I wouldn't do it any other way, assuming I had the cash.

All because of the Hawaii market.

An offer here contingent with you selling your house is weak. And most likely will not be accepted unless you are going to offer more than market value. Unless of course the owners are desperate and the house has been on the market for a long time.

Not to mention I sell mine and if there is nothing I like I can bank my usual monthly mortgage payment into a bigger down. I need all the ammo I got for a $1M house.

I have never used a moving company, too many horror stories.
We moved 500 miles two years ago. We looked into PODS. Then I saw a PODS truck overturned in the median of the freeway and the contents of the pods scattered. We also had several vehicles to relocate. Horses too.
Several trips with our pickups and trailers, and the largest Uhaul truck. We were done in a week.

If I wasn't such a tight ass, I'd pay movers to pack and move everything. I hate moving. by the third box, I just want to donate all that I have so I don't have to pack it up and move it. Hell, I still have crap from 2 moves/10 years ago in a couple boxes... The "I may need that some day" is strong in me... lol

I couldn't tell you how many times I moved in my young days. Then, started a company that did commercial furniture installs. 1. If you move yourself get the equipment--4 wheel dollies, 2 wheel dollies and lots of pads. 2. hire help--your friends won't really show up. 3. Do it in a day--the whole spread it out over a week is a PIA and will make for a miserable last day. I moved across the country twice. Both times I was able to negotiate the cost of the move w/my employers-- I may never move myself again. I had movers pack my house, load the truck, deliver and unload. 1 Broken chair and missing channel locks. Both were repaired/replaced under their guarantee. They moved my canoe, motorcycle, elliptical, weight bench and weights etc. Even for a local move I would have a tough time going back to doing it myself. Check the pricing and decide if it is truly worth your time and the headaches. Pod/Rental Truck and hired help could be a good option for a local move--I would suggest the hired help still be professionals with the right equipment. Regardless, tip you movers if they do a good job. It is worth it.

I think the company I have used when I moved cities last year was called Cross Country Movers, and I didn't have any problems with them. And when I moved, I started looking for ideas for the new decorations I was going to buy. I think this is the best part about moving. And it also helped me get rid of all the stress accumulated from the process itself. We also had so much stuff to pack, that I thought we will never finish. But when we were at our new home, putting on the wall our new house number sign from baliandboo.com, it was the best feeling ever.
