do you really think a HAM is needed?

im seriously thinking of adding a HAM to my SR5, i know i have to take a test too transmit, do you think it's worth it? or should i just rely on GPS and cell phone. i plan on a Wyoming hunt this fall.

The Technician class is very easy but give you limited access to the airwaves. You will want to move up to General to get more frequency options. Both of these tests are easy and there are a few online study sites.

This one is very good: HamStudy.org: Cutting edge amateur radio study tools

Good luck and 73s.

If you're traveling alone and looking for emergency communications in the middle of nowhere I'd look more into satellite messenger/text devices like Garmin inReach, Spot Gen3, etc.

As a professional LMR two-way radio dealer I can tell you that, and this won't be popular with a lot of HAM operators, I wouldn't want to rely on them or their systems in a real emergency.

HAM is a hobby. There are good systems, but most are really pretty bad.

As a side note, many Public Safety systems scare me too. Most are only one or two weak links from complete failure. So, its always good to have a backup plan.
