Jeep JL vs. 4Runner? LOL!!!

Had a Jeep YJ a couple of years ago and perused the Wrangler forums. The amount of issues and horrible experiences with Jeeps was mind-boggling.

I was tempted to buy a new JL instead of my 2019 4Runner. My girlfriend desperately wanted me to get the Jeep. After spending some time on the forums, I decided that playing Russian Roulette with 4 bullets in a 6 bullet cylinder was just plain stupid. I mean, there is just a TON of evidence, data, and testimonials as to just how bad the new Jeeps are.

I would LOVE for the Jeeps to be quality and reliable vehicles, but they just aren't. It's not even debatable.

I like the one member up there where 36k and 24k is a proud test of longevity... Does a jeep odometer even have a 6th digit? Or does it roll over after 99,999?

I was behind an old landcruiser (j60) that had one these stickers on it. Thought it was funny. Somewhere up North Dakota.

My wife wants a Wrangler as her next vehicle and I told her she is nuts. She gets annoyed when I have to work on our vehicles as is. I told her I don't have enough time or patience for all of the issues a Jeep comes with! That being said I have had very minimal issues with my Dakotas over the last 20 years and with my Ram over the last 4 years. I'm not sure if they just make so many Jeeps problems arise purely based on statistics or if they are built sloppily.

I didn't know Chicago allowed bots to get married and make children. Pretty cool it's so progressive over there.

I have spent lots of time on this forum because of my '10 TE that I wish I had kept. But I wanted to buy my dream Jeep, so last September I did. Bought a $59K MSRP '20 JL Unlimited Rubicon. I have owned 8 Jeeps... a '91 Grand Wagoneer that was awesome, 2 TJs that were great, 3 XJ Cherokees also great, a '12 JK Unlimited Rubicon that I had to sell when my business took a downturn... but it was great, and lastly, the '20 JL Unlimited Rubicon. The previous 7 Jeeps were all very reliable, least miles was on the '12 JK at 70k. The others were driven all into the 150k+miles.

The JL was perfect for the 9000 miles I owned it... the driver interfaces/tech/climate control (short of the defroster) are light years ahead of the 4Runner, the LED headlights, fogs, tail lights, etc were incredibly bright. Alpine stereo and 8.4" UConnect sounded great. All of the phone things worked as they should. The leather was real on the seats, steering wheel, shift knobs, and it felt good. The heated steering wheel was nice. It had auto headlights and remote start that would work with the FOB from my apartment all the way to the parking garage. And the phone could start it too. It was fast off the line with the 4.11 gears and 8sp auto transmission. Mine steered straight, no excessive play in the steering, drove nicely all the way up to 95mph, never wobbled, never leaked, engine valve train held up, doors didn't come apart, welds looked pretty, body seams weren't cracking... all of those things I read about the forum never happened. Off-road, it was a beast. For a Jeep, and especially the JL, it seemed I had won the lottery.

However, the whole time I owned it I was thinking, I miss the my old 4Runner and that the Jeep really wasn't making me as happy as it did. I missed the precision of the 4Runner on the highway. I missed the one-touch windows, the roll down rear window, the extra room, the comfort and quiet, and most of all, not worrying that all of those things I read on the forum would happen to mine eventually. I also worried that the dealership, who doesn't even know the correct amount of oil to put in a JL 3.6 until I proved it to them on their own system, would not be able to fix things that would break. Or if they could, they would have to wait forever to get parts. Apparently, because so many people do have problems, spare parts are in short supply and often take weeks to acquire.

So rather than stressing about it and lamenting the fact I stupidly sold my Trail, I traded the Jeep for a '20 ORP. I would've bought a Pro but I wasted that extra money on buying and trading the Jeep. Regardless, I'm now all about getting it back to the same as my old Trail. Yes there are things I really miss on the Rubi... not the JL forum, but I like the familiarity and confidence I have with the 4R. And since I don't mod nor do I rock crawl, the 4R will do about 95% of what the Rubi will do and the 4R is much better in snow and slick stuff.

I used to be a Jeep guy all throughout the 90s and early 2000s. Jeep made great vehicles back then. My first jeep was a 91 wrangler which I drove for years and never had 1 issue. Then I added a 90 cherokee to the garage with the birth of my first son in 93. The dogs, kids, wife and all my friends loved our jeeps. They allowed a young family to explore the great outdoors and get places no one else could and always got us home. They were trouble free and well built. I then upgraded to the grand Cherokee v8 when our 2nd child was born. That might have been my favorite car. It was fast could tow the boat with ease look great stock. The Jeep was a well built vehicle and I continue to buy them cause they were a true adventure vehicle for a young family and didn't cause me alot of unnecessary repair bills. That was then and now Jeep is owned by Fiat and they cut corners to save a dollar. When former Jeep owners up here talk about the Jeep and say they loved it for 10,000 miles or the loved the radio or the head lights I laugh so hard. That is a ridiculous endorsement of a vehicle that now has been given a "do not buy" by consumer reports for years. My buddy's 2017 Rubicon has 50k miles and he has had the transmission replaced and the rear diff along with a bunch of other repairs. Our last ski trip he rode back with me because the Jeep broke again. My 96 300k forerunner has gotten us home every trip. 25 years old and in 3 years my 3rd gen has seen the shop far less than his 2017 wrangler. My other buddy just replaced his motor at 140k in his 2010 wrangler. My 5th gen has never been in for a repair just regular service. Who cares about how old or outdated the 4 runner is when that transmission is solid as gold and that 4.0 motor gets me home with zero issues. If you need the latest nannies then buy a cross over but when I'm 50 or 100 miles from any help I need a reliable vehicle that can get the job done so I can enjoy the back country. I like a solid vehicle first then features 2nd if I'm buying it. If I lease it then I go German, but that is another story..lol.

I agree that Jeeps then > Jeeps now. Our WJ and my TJ's were some of our favorite vehicles we've had. I also really liked my 2000 Dakota. But alas, the TJ and WJ were the last good Jeeps. I tried a 2017 JK, and while it didn't give me any problems, it definitely wasn't put together as well as the TJ. I also didn't like how the oil filter drained completely at shut off on the 3.6 Pentastar. The top end noise on start up - especially if it had sat a few days, made me cringe every time. I couldn't bear keeping it outside of factory warranty and decided to trade it for my Tundra.

Problem is, now I can never decide which one I want to drive more - the 4R or Tundra!

My neighbor still has his 99 grand Cherokee but he is 81 and that thing does not get driven much but it does run...lol

I got rules to which vehicle I drive. The 3rd gen is the vehicle driven when the dogs are rolling. It is the only vehicle they are allowed inside. The wife's 5th gen is driven when she drives and we don't want to deal with the low power of the 3rd, snowboarding and other getaways. My Tundra is driven when I got to do truck stuff or my toyhauler needs to be taken. Fortunately all being Toyotas we know which ever vehicle we leave in we will come home in that vehicle. Even that 320k 3rd gen slow as she is always gets me home no matter how long where the road trip is.

The funny thing is, a lot of these guys don't even realize that their Jeeps are a piece of crap. I argued with one guy on the Jeep forum who was actually bragging about how well his had held up. It was about 4-5 years old and he had "only" had to replace 2 heater cores, head gaskets and a few other things I can't remember. I told him my 07 Tundra with 160k miles had only had preventative maintenance. There's just no comparison between Toyota and Jeep when you're talking about reliability.
