Anyways long story short quite a few of the commercial airline pilots he knows (fellow Sr. reservists) make $250 - $300K living in places like Ohio.
Sooooo if you can get into it, get hired, work for several years to get the hours to no longer be a low paid regional pilot THEN eventually there is a huge payout (like be a millionaire) in it for you. They are also expecting a major shortage in the next 5 years.
BTW, I work in IT and I have no idea why someone would be hired for their political history skills lol. That is a weird comment by OP.

Mainline gigs can be really nice, once you get them. It's a pain though. Congrats to your friend on getting his wings. What does he fly with ANG?
They've been predicting a pilot shortage for years, because that's what the math says. I personally don't believe we'll ever see fully automated airplanes, but autopilot and auto land systems can do some pretty impressive stuff. (Of course, the Max fiasco shows the other side of automation, so...) But this pilot shortage issue, along with USAF culture issues, has also caused a huge shortage in senior AF pilots, and I'm not sure they have any idea how to turn all of that around (unless they go full drone, which they might be willing to do...)
