Personally I don't have much hope for it. Typical Hollywood move. No original ideas, so let's just exploit nostalgia. Even down to the Kawasaki racing the jet and volleyball scene.

Never saw the original. Looks like I can just watch this one instead. I thought a big part of filmmaking involved creativity and artistry

It's about making money. When they invest hundreds of millions of dollars, they want as much assurance that it will make money as possible. Which is why remakes and stuff like this is popular.
On the other end of the spectrum, the creative stuff still gets made but more at the independent level. Then the major studios just sit back and see which films create a buzz at the various film festivals, swoop in and buy the rights and then distribute it. No initial risk as well as plenty of feedback to know it will do well.
I am curious to see how what companies like Netflix are doing will effect the status quo. Roma was done by them and never saw a theater. I can't think of another film that was ever nominated for a best picture Oscar without ever seeing the inside of a theater.

It takes my breath away how you guys are writing checks your bodies can't cash while riding into the danger zone.
I'll probably watch it, although I hope Val Kilmer shaped up for the volleyball scene and the producers get Kenny Loggins to do the theme song

That being said, I have a hard time sinking my teeth in the new JP's (or is it JW's?) as well. The remake saga is getting tired, and may want to consider extinction. Top Gun should land and store itself in the hangar. Tom Cruise is great, but like all these Star Wars coming out, it just feels Forced.

I'll probably see it just for the aerial action.
