I left mine running a couple times early this year when I had a bad fuel pump that wouldn't start when warm. It was either leave it running or sit at the gas station for 2 hours waiting for it to cool down.

for the people that do leave them running. are you just ignoring the CEL? do these not set it off if the cap is open when the engine is running?
we do some fleet work for the local Coke plant. multiple times throughout the year we get one of their rigs in for a CEL. because one of their drivers left the rig running while fueling up. it ends up costing them $500-600 a year in scanner charges.

Interesting topic.
Personally, I do shut the car off while pumping gas. I also tend to lock my car doors when pumping gas, always if going into the store for any reason.
I will relate a story of me buying a used car from a dealer who also ran a local gas station. It was either when closing on the sale of the car or taking it for a test drive, that the dealer drove up to his pumps, left the car running and filled it up. That was almost 35 years ago and it surprised me to see it.

I did it 2 or 3 times while waiting for my fuel pump to ship and never got a CEL.
Or maybe I did and didn't notice, I already had a CEL for the failing fuel pump.

In Central America, they always have attendants to pump the gas for you, and every time I've been to a station, the driver keeps it running. I'd say mainly because it's pretty hot there all the time, but they just don't seem to care. I've only done it probably 2x myself, just to keep the AC running
