I was just down in Colorado for the weekend of dove opener. Really wished I had brought my shotgun and bought a license. Was out with my cousin who is a ranch hand out there and there was tons of doves.

Nary a bugle to be heard in 7E this weekend. Me thinks the rut will start anyday now.

Went to check and fill my feeder Saturday only to find the squirrels had done a job on my feeder lid eating a gaping hole in it and eventually knocking the lid off. This lead to about 125 lbs of corn getting wet which filtered corn water into the motor causing it to seize up. DANG IT! Trip to farm supply store and another 3 hour round trip on Sunday to fix. Moved the feeder away from under so many trees, new lid, new motor, and some 1/2” poultry mesh to cover the new lid. That and 3 bungee cords to hold the lid on. Fingers crossed. This season the fat squirrels and I are going toe to toe. See how they survive .223 or .300 BLK.

Got back from a good hunt. Coastal blacktail in Northern Cali. Spotted some small forkies and a few black bear cubs. No trophies. But overall another great experience just being outdoors.
Sorry, I usually dont take photos when I'm out on the hunt, but snap a few when I can.

We practice on ground squirrels in spring. They’re quite destructive. Alfalfa ranchers love to let kids practice on them because their holes stop those huge (sometimes a mile long), driven, rotating sprinkler systems, which cause very expensive damage. Plus the alfalfa they consume. Some ranchers pay a few cents per squirrel to let teenagers go at it.
Property owners are effected as well, as they cause large holes, eat gardens, kill small trees. If far enough from town and close neighbors owners patrol their property daily.
My Ruger 10/22 gets more use on squirrels than other game. Usually burn a brick daily if shooting on a friend’s alfalfa pivots.
The squirrels are so prolific, populations quickly recover. Got to keep an eye out for badgers, though, they like squirrels too.

Has anyone started their season yet? Archery started a while back for us. Just waiting for Oct 12 for the Antelope opener.

My hunting buddy returned yesterday from elk hunting just inside Nevada, west of Jackpot, south of Salmon Creek Reservoir (west of Rogerson, Idaho). Got rained on, snowed on, cold. He saw lots of deer, sage hens, chukars but no elk.
Another buddy, travelling with his wife on their 55th aniversary last week, pulled into the mountains near Contact (south of Jackpot toward Wells) just exploring and sightseeing (no tags won this year). He and his wife enjoyed sitting in the spruce and aspens, watching several bucks and listening to them bugle for over two hours.
Just the way it goes.

You know hunting seasons around the corner when Busch Light comes out with the orange cans lol.
I need to get out and shoot one more time before the season starts. I got a new 30.06 last year and I've only shot it a handful of times. I'm thinking of using .223 for antelope and my white tail doe tag. Super comfortable with the gun and the animals aren't that big, and hopefully wont be shots longer than 200 yds.
Got a second set of old but still good binos from a buddy for my wife. I take the whole family out when I go hunting unless my wife doesn't want to go or its just gonna be a day of hiking.
How far do y'all travel to get to your hunting spots? This year I'm lucky to get on some private land for deer that is 30 mins outside of town. Antelope is gonna be about a 3 hour drive one way. And if I go to my bosses ranch Elk is gonna be 2 hours.

I hunt upland game. I have a five mile route full of chukars that starts six miles from my house. I like this route because I always flush birds. On longer trips I never see birds. But this route is great because I can toss my shotgun, shells and backpack (with game shears, freezer bags, miscellaneous) and go on a whim and be home in a couple hours. Sage and other grouses are also found here, though their numbers are diminishing due to wildfires in the past decade.
Antelope are in the immediate vicinity. Deer are in the hills and mountains around town, occasionally in it. Hunters generally bag game less than 20 miles away.
Pheasant and wild turkey are plentiful in a small ranching community 45 minutes away.
Elk are found in the mountains north of the above community, but far more plentiful north and east; three to four hours to the best places.

my early archery season ended on sunday. we saw very few animals. it was pretty terrible actually.
finally on the last 2 days we started seeing some legal deer, but not able to get any shots.
I did manage to get one grouse on the last day. though we did see a lot of those. most jumped before getting a shot.

Oregon Blacktail season starts on Saturday here in Oregon! Too bad i'll be at a wedding. I've got a couple clear-cuts scouted well, they are tough to access so I hope I don't have any company out there. Mature blacktails are very nocturnal, but i'm hoping this year will be mine! Best I have done is a 3x3. Hoping for a big one to euro mount, my antelope needs some company on the wall.

Got some contacts from my boss too call for ranch access for antelope. Going to call sometime today and hopefully get the OK. This weekend marks exact 2 weeks from Antelope opener. I haven't even been out scouting AT ALL. Hopefully that won't bite me in the butt later. I just want to fill the freezer. Might borrow a buds shotgun and try to flush some birds.
