Hey guys, just made the switch from a pick up to 4Runner and this is my first hunting season without a truck. I mostly duck hunt and was wondering if anyone had any recs for a roof rack or basket that I can throw some decoy bags on or a layout blind or two? Thanks.

I don't know much about 5th gen specific racks or baskets, but I run a Rola Vortex with the middle extension. I also made my own low pro mounting brackets for it.

Gut it, usually drag it to a tree, hang it, skin it, quarter it, put it in a cooler with jug of ice, load it up, leave...

I can't drag an elk, or for that matter a Mule deer, or bear. So I quarter, de-bone, and carry the meat out on my back. The bones weigh a lot, so why carry them. Sure the marrow can make for a great treat. But for an old guy, its too much to carry. So the answer, De-bone it where it fell.
I have had a few that I thought I would have to eat it where it fell.

This year I might have to debone and pack the antelope to the truck. Apparently that is key with field processing these animals.

For you bird hunters out there, do you guys hunt with dogs?

I only ask because I plan on doing a bit this year. I have a Lab. Hes a good dog, pretty bird and prey driven given the chance, but have never taken him hunting. Is it even worth tossing around the idea of taking him or not. I understand most dogs have some sort of hunting training or are certain breeds dedicated to hunting. Just don't know if its worth having him run around and jump birds for me or not.

Yea give it a shot. Have you introduced him to gunfire? I’ve found once obedience is done especially with upland dogs, nothing beats wild birds for training.

My friend had a German shorthair that he trained with a radio/shock collar. She was a couple years old when we started hunting together. She would retrieve the birds. She died of old age earlier this year. We took her hunting with us last year, but she was pretty slow due to her age and arthritis. But she still loved to go.

Some recent unexpected expenses came up and are forcing me to push back my trip for the opener of Antelope. Pretty bummed. Going to take off next Thursday and Friday and hunt 4 days though.

Spooked my trophy on the last day of this zone for me. My buddies tagged, though. No bragging rights, but put meat in the freezer for the year. Unexpectedly snowed on us for a day as well. It was a good week.

Leaving Thursday night for a couple days in another zone. Wish me luck.
