Exactly. If you use what you kill, I see nothing wrong with it.

Now, I’m not a fan of “trophy” hunting, per se, and I think there’s far too much emphasis on it today. I feel that many people focus so much on it that they miss the real reason we should enjoy hunting, to begin with: to experience and appreciate the outdoors, spend time with family and friends, etc. That emphasis also seems to lead not only to poaching, but a sense of expectation and entitlement. Just my opinion, of course.

I no longer hunt. I’m a game warden, so I get to hunt YOU: I just can’t gut you and put you on the grill later on 😎. I also don’t have the time, as I work most every weekend, obviously.

But my job makes it so that I’m already enjoying nature and don’t need a rifle or bow to do it, so I’m lucky.

However, I certainly don’t fault others for it. Just because someone engages in an activity that you don’t agree with or understand, it’s no reason to “hate” them. Especially if what they’re doing is legal and doesn’t hurt you.

I WISH I had a job that allowed me the opportunity to be outdoors everyday. Literally anything. Logger, Park Ranger, Wildland firefighter. My buddy works in nor cal and all he does is drive up and down roads in the foothills and look for hazard trees that might fall on power lines... I definitely wouldn't have the pressure to hunt as much if I did something like that..

Just like this upcoming weekend. I'm going on my first elk hunt, solo, about 2.5 miles in and about 2000ft in elevation gain. I would love to shoot an elk, but the terrain might persuade me to put my rifle down and pick up my camera. Probably won't want to pack out an elk alone that deep. Especially for a first hunt.

Even if I see elk I would be ecstatic.

Time will tell.

This is what hunting is about right here. To me, hunting is defined by appreciating nature; the little things that one only notices after sitting out in a tree, listening, observing...for hours on end.

Final scouting trip this weekend. Elk hunt (my first) starts the day after Thanksgiving.

For those of us that live in the Valley of the Sun and never see these temps, it's going to be cold in Northern AZ when I get up there. Lows of mid-teens is in the forecast.

Burrrr!

Many of my hunts are unsuccessful. Either we don’t see anything in season or I miss. Many years of hunting licenses have been unfilled. But I don’t care. To bag game isn’t my primary reason for being out there. As others have expressed, its the other perks that make hunting a satisfying experience.

I am fortunate in that I can hunt upland game within five miles of home. Or I can go elsewhere in Nevada. Mainly I stick close to home.

I am not interested in trophies, or even having my photo taken with bagged game. I don’t judge those who do.

For anyone hunting in the Flagstaff, AZ area (like me) later this week, be prepared for snowy and cold hunt. Single digit lows, with anywhere from 6" to 4' depending on elevation.

Be safe all,

Eddie

Went out last sunday. Hiked 6 miles in some pretty nasty country. Only daw 4 mule deer, 3 does and 1 spike buck. That concluded elk hunting for me this season.

Welp. My dad came up from California for thanksgiving. Still had a doe tag and he’s never really been hunting before or gutted a big animal, so I thought what the heck. Took him out to a ranch I have permission on and filled my doe tag. 3/4 tags filled this year. Hopefully next year I can notch my elk tag.

Funny story time... well we went out and sat in some bushes waiting for deer to come out. Had a few chances too shoot but the shots just didn’t feel right so I passed, anyway. I have a breast pocket on my jacket where I like to keep my phone. Time goes on and I end up shooting. My wife was on her way in the pick up and I was waving at her to stop so we could walk to the truck because the doe was in the other field. She doesn’t stop so we just have her pick us up. So we gut the deer load her up and make the normally 30 min drive, which it now 45 due to icy roads, back to town. We had to stop for some groceries and my wife and my dad went in because the kids fell asleep. I go looking through my jacket and panicked. I ask my wife too use her phone to find my location... it’s in a field... 45 mins away. MY PHONE FELL OUT OF MY POCKET. So what turned into a quick and easy hunting trip turned into a LONG and easy trip. My son got real antsy on the way back and no one had a good time until we got home lol.

Elk: 1, Eddie: 0

Fall down seven, get up eight.

Cold (single digits) and snowy (~12") the first couple days/nights. Muddy and warmer the last couple days.

Good story Zeke. Don't just hate those types of fcuk ups? So much wasted time for such a simple thing. I had one on my trip too....wasted about 2 hours.

I feel ya on the elk win ratio there. Hoping to get out later this season and fill the tag with a cow. A couple guys around the shop might have some ins for us on the shoulder season.

Do tell how you added time to your hunt lol.

This is the exact reason I just picked up my 2000 Limited, was for hunting. Tired of bouncing around in my 1 ton Ram.

Drew another elk tag (any) this year.

Thankful for another chance since last year's hunt, well, presented some unexpected challenges that limited my hunt.

Different units and longer hunt this year so I'm excited for November to arrive. Well, assuming we are still not in lock down by then.
