Red Meat Eaters Rejoice!

International Experts Say It's OK to Keep Eating Red Meat at Current Levels
By Amy Orciari Herman
Edited by David G. Fairchild, MD, MPH

An international panel comprising nutrition experts and primary care providers, among others, suggests that adults aged 18 and older continue their current consumption of unprocessed and processed red meat. The recommendation, based on findings from five systematic reviews, is ranked as "weak" and is based on "low-certainty" evidence.

Here's the rationale behind the guidance, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine:

A decrease of 3 servings per week was associated with "a very small and often trivial absolute risk reduction" in health outcomes, such as cardiovascular events, cancer incidence, and mortality.

Omnivores generally reported red meat as essential to their diets and were unwilling to change their consumption, so a "trivial" benefit from cutting back is unlikely to motivate dietary changes.

Editorialists write that the recommendation "is sure to be controversial, but it is based on the most comprehensive review of the evidence to date." They add that animal welfare and environmental concerns "might be more likely to sway people" to decrease their red meat intake. "And if ... some receive a small health benefit as a side effect, everyone wins."

As Ron White says, I didn't climb to the top of the food chain to eat carrots.

Sponsored by the beef growers association. But I like my red meat. Especially the natural stuff I take myself. Sometimes even have help. Got an elk a few years ago with the help of a lady's Subaru. I have a whole new appreciation of Subaru's ever since. It didn't spoil much of the meat. Car was toast, but meat was good.

Mainly why I don't pay a lot of attention to any of this supposed "research" that comes out these days. Studies are sponsored, and they're not paying scientists to find the truth. Everyone has an agenda.

All I know is several of my and my wife's grandparents lived into their 90's. Being in farm country, they all ate pork, chicken, beef their entire lives. Most of it being home-cooked (often using the evil lard, as well as butter - and drank whole milk. Oh the horror!) They ate out only occasionally.

Thus, my money is on processed, manufactured foods with manmade chemicals for flavor / preservatives being the problem. It's magnified because more people today eat THOSE kind of foods than our grandparents did. Meat, veggies, fresh bread, fruits are not the problem.

I enjoy a good steak, but I try to eat more fish and vegetables than red meat. There’s the environmental concern as well for the amount of red meat we go through. I live in Central California, and we have large sized ranches and dairies here, with 10s of thousands heads of cows per ranch. The stench when you drive through Hwy 99 is very real, and gets significantly worse during the summer.

I’m in my 40s, and I do remember eating steak was kind of a luxury that we only get on special occasions, like when relatives or long time friends of my parents come visit, or when steaks were on sale. Most of the time, we ate some chicken, but a lot of fish and veggies. My parents stocked the fridge with fruits as well. We very rarely had sodas. Those were special treats.

Like everything, the key is moderation. I can’t imagine eating red meat daily would yield any health benefits. But you’re absolutely right in that processed foods are killing us, that and laziness are probably more detrimental to Americans’ health than a piece of steak.
