"It has been backed up by research that two masks are, in fact, better than one," Hnida said. "Specifically what we're saying is that two masks may actually equal the protection you would get from N-95 masks, which is considered the best mask there is short of a complete respirator-type unit."
"The reason for that is you do wind up getting more filtration of viral particles. It becomes more of an obstacle course for the viral particle to make its way from the air into your nose and throat and then into your lungs."
But Hnida cautions that three masks may be going too far, since that could interfere with the ability to breathe.
He pointed out Joe Biden has been "double-masking" for many months, as have NFL coaches at games.
"Even in my own family, when we have outside contact — as limited as it may be — we double mask," Hnida said. "So the question is, 'Is it effective?' The answer is 'yes' -- and it's something you may want to consider."
Wear a mask, everyone else should wear a mask, and if you have to be around dingbats who don't wear a mask, wear a clear plastic face shield. You'll be as protected as you can be.
Seriously, this obsession with the mask itself, I don't get it. It's important to do, but if some selfish jackass who doesn't wear a mask blasts spit in your face, you're going to get more of that spit into your body through your eyes than through the mask which means you're more likely to get the virus through your eyes than your mouth and nose.
Wear a mask. It's not for yourself. It's for protecting everyone else. And if everyone else wears a mask, they're protecting you. We all have to be unselfish. You don't even have to do a perfect job of wearing the mask for it to be more effective than not.
I don't get the mask obsession either. If you're sick, wear a mask. Shield your coughs and sneezes. Wash your hands. All common sense. But there is little to no evidence of masks protecting the wearer (a large Danish study found no statistical difference), and little to no evidence of spread from asymptomatic individuals (although the largest study on the issue, showing zero cases of asymptomatic spread, was from the Chinese government and should be viewed accordingly). Now that vaccination are being provided to protect those actually at risk, it is time to leave this behind. Instead, it looks like mask creep will only continue.

Hardly. Wear your mask.

HA! Wear your goddamn mask.
It is important to wear a mask, but all this hoopla about mask optimization would be better spent on promoting halfway decent mask wearing. None of that bullshit like people cutting a hole in it or even more common things like wearing it below your nose.
We're a year into this and no one can show a single proven case of spread from an asymptomatic individual. Only mushy words like "we believe it could be possible in rare cases". Countless cases of asymptomatic positives going into domestic lockdown with families, none of whom contract COVID. And masks, at best, stop one of many portals, while still allowing eyes and hands to spread the virus. It's like putting a snorkel on a 4Runner and then fording deeper than the hood. Sure, the snorkel did something. Just not enough to matter in isolation.
