RIP - what a beast. this was from the article:

Quote:
He dodged German tanks, hiding behind tree trunks, tossing hand grenades along the way. Coolidge and his men killed 26 enemy soldiers, wounding 60 others. Coolidge was the first to approach the Germans, and the last to leave.
I think band of brothers series did a great job at depicting the war itself but also focusing on some of the soldiers themselves

My dad was a WW2 vet but my mom n dad divorced when i was 6...so i never had a good enough relationship to talk to him about (i was a later comer)
However i have talked to 2 WW2 vets from our gun club that was in the battle of the bulge. One of them told me he should have been killed at least 3 times...the shells that came in n landed right beside him were duds.
He always told me...out of any movie....the band of brothers was closest to being real as far as he was concerned....

My dad was a WWII vet and he didn't talk a lot about it. He was in North Africa, never made Italy as he was wounded. He's been dead for 44 years now, but when he comes back (Acts 24:15, John 5:28,29; Job 14:14,15) it will be to a new world (2Peter3:13), where there is an" abundance of peace"( Psalm 37:11) and he will have the opportunity to live" forever" on that earth (Psalm 37:29).

I have had the privilege of spending time with a few of the "Greatest generation". One of the pilots who taught me to fly was a B-17 driver. Our neighbor when i grew up flew "Juggs" in the pacific and was shot down. One of our check airman was the son of a Tuskegee airman. It was always a real treat to have dinner with his Dad. I had an uncle who was shot down over Meintz. Spent the rest of the war as a POW. I have his last flight plan paperwork. He was invited to come a retrieve the remnants of his crew after they were found. That was an amazing experience. But the one who always will be with me, was they guy who I met by total accident. He was one of the few survivors of the Tang. His real world description of what "Guest of the Emperor" meant still shakes me to the bone. Don't miss the opportunity to have a chat with them. They changed the world, that I had the privilege to grow up in.

that's too bad you never had the chance to talk to you father about his experiences. my grandfathers were both with Italy in WWII. One was captured in battle, one didn't see combat (war just ended when he was in training, he was a bit younger). I never met my grandfather that was captured, he died long before I was around. my family doesn't really know much about his role as well. I tried searching historical records but found nothing - he did not speak of the war to his family so that history is lost forever

the stories some of the vets have are incredible. I'm a big fan of war movies, of course they are entertaining, but they are also reminders of some of the terrible events that shaped our world today

The passage of time is resulting in many forgetting about WWI and just how tough that war was as well. the more we understand about the history (and of course current events) that shaped our freedoms, the more we can appreciate it and learn from it. once we start forgetting, we are doomed to repeat the past

For sure. Forget the past, and you WILL repeat it.
