What Cheap Used Reliable P/U Truck Would You Buy ?

What Cheap Used Reliable P/U Truck Would You Buy ?

I gave away my '02 Prerunner (with shell) and bought a 4Runner in 2017.

But oh, how it sucks to not have a pickup when you need it.

I'm having a stupid brainstorm about buying an old cheap hopefully reliable pickup just to have on hand for moving stuff.

Goodness this is probably a bad idea.

About cheap, another advantage is my insurance should be less on it, right ?

I definitely don't want one of those '05 - '09 Tundras where the air injection pump goes out.

So, any suggestions ? I do have faith in Toyota, for better or worse. And last I knew Ford would be the pick for reliable in American pickups.

What do you guys think ?

Clarification: I'm talking less than $5,000 here . . .

OK I just perused some online listings, yikes, not much out there in that range . .

Yup, bad idea.

If you can find the 90’s F150 with the inline 6, it is indestructible and simple to work on. I bought one in 1998 with 198,000 abused miles on it and kept it till 2019 with 335,000 miles. It only required a battery and alternator rebuild around 300,000. They don’t make stuff like that anymore. Simple, simple, simple.

Good luck.

I had a quick look on autotrader. Saw a couple from the 2000s but when it looks too good they usually turn out to have salvage title.

Next question for the group, what are your thoughts about salvage title? My understanding has been — have someone competent check to see if the frame is bent or has been straightened. I guess it’s a bit of a crapshoot.

Under 5k in today's market during a chip shortage doesn't get much. The I6 Ford is a solid choice. It sounds like this is an around town, Home Depot truck? Avoid anything with cylinder deactivation. Avoid the Ford 6.0l diesel. Google it.

Also consider Ford or GM mid to late 80's V8. Be sure to consider if these are required to perform emissions testing in your area. If you live in area with salt on the roads consider shopping in Florida, Texas and Southern California.

Utility trailer towed by your 4runner is another option.

The Chevy/GMC 5.3 from the late 90's/early 2000's are very solid. Well maintained can get 300k+

All good, appreciate the input guys.

Yes Home Depot around town truck, and yes wouldn't mind an oldie. I don't think auto trader even posts anything of that vintage. So maybe find something local, I'm in San Diego . . .

Absolutely! Probably the best light duty Bullitt proof easy to work on cheap parts work horse ever made. Both of Ours had the cast iron 4 spd and the heavy stuff on it. Look for the double shocks on the front for a give away on the heavy stuff. Simple, indestructible, no pizazz truck. I think they started making that platform in 1988. Surprisingly, it was also fun to drive. Slow, but easy on gas. Pushing harder on the gas doens't get you there faster in that truck, just burns more gas. A little patience pays off. The one with the overdrive tranny wasn't as Bullitt proof.
