2023 Sequoia or Lift our 4th Gen
Hello all,
We are at a cross-roads with our 4th gen T4R. The premise is that the shocks are border-line shot and it comes down to two options:
1: Lift the 4runner: nothing crazy - 2-3" - budget of about $2k
2: Order the new Sequoia and just replace the shocks on the 4runner for the time being since the new Sequoia will probably take ages to get here.
An additional question is: Would putting 2k into a lift on the 4runner add value when we go to resell it? I don't believe it does.
Let me know what you all think.

#1. Order the Sequoia.
#2. Spend the least amount as necessary to fix the 4Runner if you're considering selling it.

Most people expect to get back most or all the $$ they put into their truck when they sell it.
They are being unrealistic, while you have a better grip on reality
You might get 25% of that $2K, or if you wait for the right person maybe more.

Thanks. It's the train of thought I am on as well:
Of course then the Sequoia will get pushed out in production or is sold out and then we'll have to wait another year or so for that.
Choices Choices.

You're right, it's unrealistic to get $$ back for what work you put in. It shows in all the 4runners on offer-up or Craigslist. "Wait for the right person"... It's true but laughable and a waste of time to attempt *Not a criticism of your statement because it's true.
I always knew any work I put into my Sentra back in the day was only for me and the next person wouldn't give a damn - I still miss that thing since it was a car that my father and I built/rebuilt/etc when he still could. But sentimental value doesn't go into the algorithm on KBB.

Not only will you not get any return on lifting the 4R, but it will also cause potential buyers to question as to whether the vehicle has been abused. The folks that will be interested because of the lift (young male buyers) in many cases do not have the income to be able to afford a 4R.

Unless you plan on doing the suspension install yourself a $2k budget will be about what you spend on a full suspension install whether you lift it or keep it at the stock height. Thinking of a Bilstein 6112 or Eibach Pro level suspension or even just doing an OEM replacement.
If you plan to keep the current springs and just do a 5100 swap out you can probably have a shop do it for about $1300 give or take (5100 strut/shock costs about $500 shipped - installs here in Denver cost about $800-$900)
If you aren't planning on putting larger tires on it, why would you lift it?

I really like the Sequoia, its just too big for my off-roading.
Get the Sequoia and just do the shock/shocks that really need to be replaced.
Lifting it wont add to the value any more than it being a 4Runner already does. It could also hurt the sale since not everyone wants something lifted.

Besides warranty work and alignments I've done all my own work so I'd install the suspension myself.
Taking the sequoia out of the picture the goal was to put a slightly larger tire on in the future but to answer your question, "Why lift it?" Because the 4th Gen 4runner doesn't look "right" at it's normal ride height. Does that matter? No.
Again taking the Sequoia out of the picture if we were for sure keeping the 4runner we would lift it when the shocks need to be replaced.

That makes sense. Well, if I were to do my suspension over again with the intention of lifting it - I would only do adjustable compression Kings

This gets off topic on the original topic I had a bit but I think Kings are a bit out of the "use range" that we're looking at. While it's incredibly beautiful stuff it's not useful for our use. ☺
But I like your Gucci taste! ☺

I would vote to replace the current shocks and wait for the Sequoia, unless you want to keep the 4Runner for another few years to recoup the suspension lift cost.

I would do the needed repairs and factor in some upgrades/mods on the 4th gen and maybe plan on getting a 2024 sequoia. I don't want the first year of any make/model anymore. I'd sit it out a year and see how many issues the new sequoia has and if they get corrected. The 2022 Tundra has a ton of issues so far, hopefully they don't follow over to the sequoia. If you need a bigger vehicle, I'd probably get a 2022 sequoia (the old one, lol), or maybe the expedition.

Just my .02, if you plan to keep it, do the lift and make it what you want it to be. If you plan to trade/sell, replace defective shocks with cheap stock equivalent to ensure a quicker sale and move on.

Thanks! I'm looking at an OEM quality swap at this point.
