Just how bad is the oil consumption on the 2.4liter 4 Cylinder?
A dealer near me has a pristine 2007 RAV4, 2wd, 2.4 4cylinder.
56k original miles, a stack of service records, not a scratch on it, etc.
They were wanting $16.5k for it, plus TT&L, but I was able to talk them down to $14.1k out the door if I paid cash. I haven't signed yet, but have the price in writing.
Plenty of other 3rd gens going for $11-12k + TTL, with around 150k miles, so this seems pretty fair. It has literally a 3rd the miles for almost the same price.
Of course, being a 2007, this does have the 2.4, not the 2.5. I know the 2.4 has an oil consumption problem. Research shows this starts at over 100k miles, and can possibly be circumvented by more religious oil changes, cylinder cleaners, etc.
The dealer says that it does not consume oil, but of course they'd say that. The CarFax shows nothing (not that it would show a simple oil top off). Is there anything that would highlight a potential consumption issue? I'd definitely want to take any preventative measures I could to help avoid this being an issue in the first place.
I understand the potential issues with a low mileage older car, and will replace all the fluids and rubber as they are likely original.
Overall, what is people's opinion of this? Take the deal, or 'settle' for a near 150k 2010+ for the same price?
