Need advice on propane regulator

So I have a propane firepit that I use for cold weather camping. Uses a 20lb propane tank. I’ve noticed that when the temp is very cold (mid teens-mid 20s) the fire pit will begin to die down and the flames will become almost non existent. Pouring warm water on the regulator will instantly fix the issue till it gets cold again. Will replacing the stock regulator on the firepit with an adjustable one solve my issue?

I’ve used propane to heat plane engines in much colder temps, sometimes into the negatives, and it’s worked great. Don’t understand why this firepit is struggling other than it being the regulator.

Attached is a picture of the regulator on my firepit

I have a Little Red Campfire and it has an adjustable regulator. It seems I am always adjusting it to keep the fire constant. An adjustable regulator should take care of your issue.

Propane is extremely cold, something like -50º. Even if it’s over 100º out, if propane escapes you can get frostbite if your hand or exposed skin comes in contact. During my working years, I spent years running a propane powered forklift (Toyota - yeah!) and protocol was to wear heavy, elbow length rubber gloves while fueling. Miserable in summer where I worked in a large borax processing plant near Death Valley.

That said, I use my outdoor barbecue even during subzero temperatures. Often, even during warm weather, I have observed my barbecue reluctant to light or have a low flame. For some reason that I haven’t researched, but the manual of my barbecue says occasionally happens, opening the valve quickly causes this phenomena. Closing the valve and opening it slowly will get things back to normal again.

Yes, frosty weather is my main problem when using propane regulators. I solve this problem by covering the regulator with a warm cloth. Use your old jacket. Btw, it would be nice to clean this accumulated soot more often. And the same precautions are also suitable for taking care of propane tank gauges. Propane level sensors may be inaccurate if there is a lot of garbage and dust. Also, some models are sensitive to low temperatures. It would be better if you look at this list of quality regulators https://daddycookingtips.com/best-propane-tank-gauges. It's better to choose high-quality ones to quickly notice a lack of propane or a leak.
