Rolling Back Odometer!
Hey all,
I found this on another site:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Simple way to roll back the odometer on the 4runner w/o being detected:
-On an open parking lot (flat surface)
a. Turn steering wheel to full lock left
b. start car , go forward in 3 complete rotations.
c. turn off ingitiion. Wait a full 60 seconds and restart
d. leaving wheel at full lock left, engage R and back up 5 complete rotations (slowly). This engages the roll back function.
e. Continue in reverse: After this point every full 360 rotation will remove app. 110 miles from the odometer. Be advised: the odometer will not display the reduction yet...
f. To reveal/display the rolled back odometer reading the car must be driven forward for at least 5 continuous miles.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This really works my '02 4runner!!
I just rolled my odometer back from 27083 miles to 25100 miles. Just remember to keep records so you won't forget the proper oil change interval!
Have fun!
BTW, this forum does NOT advocate doing this illegal procedure...it's FYI only! Do at your own risk!

That is totally illegal and generally not a good idea. If you're not careful the DMV or dealership will catch stuff like this. Although I guess taking 100 miles off wouldn't matter, it also wouldn't affect resale value. You'd have to take off thousands, which almost certainly will get caught.
edit: However, I must admit that I am interested to see if this actually works. Even so, I am completely against this.

WOW!
Damn interesting although I wouldn't do.
Wonder if it will work on 4th gen. 4runners? All cars?
Toyota should know about this.

What legitimate purpose could this feature serve? I mean, why would Toyota build it in?

Not only is it not a good idea, it's entirely possible that the ECU remembers that this procedure was invoked. If so, it might be trivially detected the next time you take your car in for service.
Here in California, cars with known incorrect odometers get a braneded title. That just can't help your resale. Moreover, if this feature ever becomes widely known, I wouldn't be suprised to see it effect the resale value of ALL 4runners.

Thai, you had me going until I read it was an April Fools joke. I was surprised that you would leak this information to us because I saw on the news that they busted a ring of people who did this in New Jersey. You had me nervous that this site would get closed down!
