Question Anyone spent time in El Salvador?

I am considering accepting a 3 month position. The jet I was flying has been sold to a guy down there in textile business. He wants me to go down there to train his permanent crew.

The money isn't outstanding but it beats the hell out of what I earned today

Is it nice? I am a non-Spanish speaking WASP. Will I be the next face on the news blurb talking about hostages?

What's the whether in San Salvador like?

Thanks guys

so my family does not have friends there but they do say it is "unstable". perhaps that is why they don't have friends there. As a man it would be safer though. good luck with your decision.

Thanks. I'd be living in company housing and have a driver so that should help. As Americans we're funny, it's probably just fine but not knowing the language etc. makes us nervous. Truth is we'd be at greater risk in parts of Atlanta, LA or Detroit....

I'll keep you updated. If I do go I'm sure I'll be posting pics of every wierd Toyota I see

should be fun. As a guy I would take the risk and follow those state dept. recs. There are some web sites with people living in El Salvador....I'm sure your company takes precautions and can advise you......vaya con dios mi amigo =)

There are probably more people from El Salvador living here in VA than there are in their own country. LOL!

Seriously, though, you should be okay there......so long as you abide by a few "personal safety" guidelines. Most of them will be revealed to you by any 'local folks' in whom you can place your trust.

Don't drink the water! Your gringo system will not be used to some of the microbes in their tap water. The natives will be immune, but you will not be. Get a filtration system (many hotels will have them) or rely upon bottled water for drinking or cooking. For bathing or laundry, don't worry about using it directly from the tap.

Learn some rudimentary Spanish. I have a four-CD set that works wonders for picking up the basic stuff. Beyond that, carry a pocket dictionary or electronic translator (inexepensive nowadays). English and Spanish are both Latin-based, so you will find many cognates. Get some basic nouns and verbs in your vocabulary, and you need not worry about tense or syntax. It's a lot easier than trying to brush up on Russian, Chinese, Arabic or Hebrew.

99% of Latinos will respond very favorably to you if they see you making an effort to learn their language. My rudimentary Spanish is so butchered beyond belief, yet they can get the idea of what I am trying to say.

Good luck to you!

I was there and there were no problems. There is a language barrier in many countries, but you need to be prepared for this, at least install an interpreter on your smartphone. I had a more difficult case, since having arrived there, I urgently needed to translate several documents into Spanish and I could not find a certified translator. I had to take risks and use the online translation services by reviews translationreport.com/. It’s good that they worked pretty quickly, otherwise I would have problems.
