Man Shot For Making Noise During Movie

(Sunday, December 27, 2008 ~19:36 PST - Philadelphia)

A man enraged by a noisy family sitting near him in a movie theater on Christmas night shot the father of the family in the arm, police said.

James Joseph Cialella, 29, of Philadelphia, faces six charges that include attempted murder and aggravated assault. He remained in custody Saturday.

Police said Cialella told the man's family to be quiet, then threw popcorn at the man's son. The victim, whom television reports identified as Woffard Lomax, told police that Cialella was walking toward his family when he stood up and was shot.

Detectives called to the United Artists Riverview Stadium theater in South Philadelphia found Cialella carrying the weapon, a .380-caliber handgun, in his waistband, police said.

Lt. Frank Vanore called the incident "scary that it gets to that level of violence from being too noisy during a movie."

Lomax, 31, of Yeadon, was released from a hospital after the shooting. He declined to comment when contacted by phone Saturday.

It was not immediately known whether Cialella had a lawyer or whether bail had been set. A woman who answered a call to his home number Saturday declined to comment.

A theater manager referred calls to Regal Entertainment Group spokesman D. Westerling, who did not immediately return a phone message Saturday.

Police could not confirm what movie was playing in the theater, but The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that it was "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button."

i wanted to do the same to three girls sitting behind me at the movie the other night. I didn't think it was possible to talk and giggle through a whole movie. Not that the movie was funny at all, it was actually a pretty sad movie.

Yeah it was more like thinking about telling them to shut the hell up. But i bit my tongue even though i know the theater would have liked me better for it.

If people wanna talk why don't they say home...never understood that...

Nothing drives me crazier than someone constantly talking and giving a commentary on the movie the whole time...like making comments on each thing that happens in the movie...

Ahh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Want to kill LOL

Yet another reason why I have given up going to the movies - people talking during a movie drives me crazy.

Who the hell takes a gun to the movies?? What a douche. Yet another reason why the average joe should NOT be allowed to carry a firearm.

i went to movie once w. my uncle and the same thing...girls behind us were giggling and talking and rocking back in their chairs so it made a squeeking noise...so my polite uncle turned to them and said "is that what your bed sounds like at night?"

we never heard a peep from them the rest of the movie

Nothing is more annoying than those who sit behind you, either put their feet up on your chair, or kick your seat back.

One reason I don't go to the movies--unless my friend gets me comp tickets. And with movies coming on to home video (DVD or BluRay) so fast now, I'll wait and watch in the comfort of my own couch and not deal with the other annoying patrons.

Yup, with the quality of Blu-Rays, i find very little reason to go to the movies. I prefer to sit at home and watch movie at MY rate (e.g. bathroom breaks!).

For Techno, i carry my gun (legally) everywhere because a madman can be anywhere.

Good for you Thai, I bet the shooter in the cinema says the same thing. I'm sorry that you live in that fear.
Needing guns to defend yourself from guns is a flawed logic, but whatever...:gun:
