Concealed Carry
What are your thoughts? Do you live in a state that has it?

Yes. And I do. My thoughts are that it is essential to me, especially while traveling, as a last-resort safety precaution for myself and my loved ones. However, I despise irresponsible gun owners. My father was very meticulous about teaching us the proper respect that comes with carrying a rifle or a sidearm from a very early age, which I believe has benefitted us immensely. I would never think of drawing a sidearm except as a final resort to an uncompromiseable life-threatening situation, God forbid such a thing to occur, in which case I would not hesitate to follow through. I'm a practiced shot with each of my pistols, but I am not the type who takes them casually.
Those are my thoughts

Yes, Colorado allows it... permits obtained from local sheriff's office. I don't have a firearm in the house due to small child, but when she's older I plan to get the proper training and apply for a concealed weapons permit.

NC has it and I carry one. I don't know why I took so long to get it (the permit) but I have it now and I've always carried in the car especially when travelling. But now I carry most of the time. My motto has always been these:
Better to have my gun and not need it; than to need my gun and not have it.
Better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6.
Seriously though, it makes my wife feel better and practically forced me to go to get my CCW, I've wanted to get it but couldn't see spending the $250 total for the privlege. But now I recommend it to my friends.
Gun ownership is a huge issue as there are some dumb people out there that make it hard for the rest of us. My parents didn't give me the finer points of handling a gun, I had to learn that when I got older and purchased my first handgun. When I have kids they will learn to respect a gun like I was never told. Well they did tell us a bit, but mostly not to touch them period.
I will take my kids out shooting when they are old enough, pistol, rifle, shotgun you name it..
sorry geek humor with the HTML-ist brackets
well just to add a little more geek humor, for any Debian users out there
apt-get install CCW_NC

I had a permit and carried when I worked downtown Pittsburgh on the evening shift. Nothing ever happened, but I felt better. My wife thought it was dangerous and a nusiance.
When we moved to Georgia, I didn't bother to immediately get one. After living there for a few months, my wife and I got into a bad situation driving home late at night when we were stopped at a light. The next morning I went to the County building and got a permit to cary again. My wife didn't mind at all.
Now that I've moved again, I just need an afternoon off to go get one.

Well, thanks to Feinstein, Boxer and their ilk, CCW is not allowed in CA by law abiding citizens. (I think you must provide a compelling reason i.e. you carry large amount sof cash for business)

I look forward to the day there is a nation wide carry permit and you won't have to worry about all that leg work.
The leader is coming, in the form of letting off duty policy and eventually retired police carry concealed. They the general public will be able to do it. It is not blood flowing in the streets like most people lead one to believe will happen with CCW permits become available in states.

Here are my feelings and thoughts:
As far as the carry and conceal I have no problems with that. Those that you really have to worry about get guns permit or no permit. If there were laws that said it was illegal, I do not believe they would stop carrying.
Now my other thoughts, I was much like many who are scared of guns, and because of my daughter I said I would never get one. But after shooting a paintball this year I got the itch to go shooting. Knowing at my age a pellet gun would not do it for me I took a gun safety course, and have put in a good amount of time at the range. After doing all that I feel really confident when/if my gun permit ever arrives I can keep a gun in my house safely. There are several steps I am going to take that those that lost children to gun accidents have not.
1. It will remain unloaded.
2. The gun and the ammo will be locked in two separate lock boxes, in separate rooms.
3. The gun will not only be unloaded it will be locked without a magazine, safety on, a trigger lock, and a cable lock.
4. When I think the time is right, I will teach my daughter everything she needs to know about my gun(s). So god forbid her friends or anyone gains access to them, she will know how to load, unload, shoot, lock, etc.

I live in NYS, and have had a full carry permit for over 20 years. I to wish they would enact a nationwide carry permit system. But, I also am not holding my breath. It is bad enough in NY, as it is now. It depends on what county you live in as to how, when, and what restrictions will be placed on your permit when it is approved.

Don't do all of that when you need the gun you won't have it available. They now have small gun safes that work off of your finger print it will except two finger prints (you and wife) but your child can't get into it. (easy quick access when you are awoken in the middle of the night) They are about 18" x 12" and cost around $250.

I have a similar dilema, with my gun. How does a homeowner store a gun if that gun is there for protection. One scenerio is you need the gun and only have seconds, how fast are you going to be to retrive the gun, the amo, the magazine, unlock the fun and load it. Its obvious to any idiot that if you have kids you must do the above, but what will you do when you actually need it.
Right now I have a shotgun, which is unloaded, and locked my son is only two but I'm not taking any chances. The above scenrio always bothers me. How do you guys handle it.
