BTW, with all due respect to Obama, he was stupidly wrong in his statement about the whole situation...and now he is paying for it.

How appropriate that an average woman can produce an editorial with more lucidity than the erudite professor Gates.

I wonder how the good professor would feel if there had been a break-in at his house and the cops did not catch the burglar in the act.
Would he then be saying that they were racist for not giving proper police protection to a black man's house? Sheesh!

C'mon, the police were overzealous;maybe the prof was being an ass but there's no law against being an ass and he shouldn't have been arrested.
We weren't there so we don't really know exactly what happened;if it happened to one of us you guys would be on a member's side dogging the cops.
This thread is just Thai hating on Obama.
This is minor and will blow over pretty quick;there's bigger issues we really should be paying attention to.

Yeah, like spending more money than any other President has ever spent. This is the Best thing that has happened to this administration since he made fun of the Special Olympians.
He is the least experienced candidate to ever run for President of the USA and he continues to prove it every day!

I'm confused...you said that we were not there...and i believe that YOU WERE NOT THERE EITHER! So, how do you know that the police was "overzealous"?? Actually, THERE IS A LAW for being an ass in front of an officer...it is called, "disorderly conduct"! And this was why the Professor got arrested. You pull that shit in front of ANY officer, and see where it will get you! Per Wikipedia: "Police may use a disorderly conduct charge to keep the peace when people are behaving in a disruptive manner to themselves or others, but present no serious public danger."
Actually, if you even bother to READ up on the case, then you will see that the Professor does NOT dispute ANY of the police records! Again, he does NOT dispute any of what the police wrote down on their report. So, the police acted correctly in the situation because, if you notice, NONE of the police officers involved are suspended nor reprimanded. In fact, the main officer is HIGHLY REGARDED for his actions against all races since he IS AN INSTRUCTOR ON RACE RELATIONS at the police academy!
If any of the members here acted like an ass in front of the cops, he/she is on his own! That is just plain stupid to do...you (and Obama) may think otherwise.
Obama made a dumbass statement before knowing the facts and he paid for it. His inexperience is showing everyday....
BTW, your opinion proves just how blind you are, RonM!! Yeah, you used to claim that you're an "independent" voter...independent you say??!

To start, I thought there was no need to bring up that issue during a speech on "health reform." Was that a ploy to cover up for the WEAK, unorganized, and senseless speech???
As for Prof Gates, the sergeant did everything right. A normal person doesn't pick a lock and make a scene. The officer did not know whether there was a divorce and he was trying to break in to steal/get revenge etc. Of course the cop should have been taught in the academy that burglars are not middle aged men with canes. I read in the paper that there are recordings of the situation- lets hope those are released so all the facts are out.
I don't think Obama had any business calling out the Cambridge police department. Unfortunately, officers don't have the luxury of secret service protecting their backs when they go into dangerous situations. The uproar around Obama's remarks is 100% correct. Maybe now America will wake up. Also, I found Obama's last few sentences very offensive.
As for his health plan, I am very concerned. America is in a lot of trouble if this reform passes. Also, Obama portrayed doctors completely wrong in his speech (they don't communicate, red pill/blue pill- **generic medications aren't always correct, if you go to a doctor with a sore throat you lose your tonsils).

'Your Mama’
A report by Sergeant James Crowley describes a confrontation with Gates that started in the foyer of the Harvard professor’s home and escalated. Gates demanded that Crowley show proof of being a police officer, according to additional police reports posted on the Boston Globe’s Web site.
After Gates produced his Harvard identity badge, Crowley said he was ready to leave the house because the professor’s shouting was “making it difficult for me to transmit pertinent information” to the dispatcher, the report said. When Crowley asked Gates to follow him outside if he had further questions, Gates said, “Yeah, I’ll speak with your mama outside,” the sergeant wrote.
Gates continued accusing the sergeant of racial bias “and continued to tell me that I had not heard the last of him” on the front porch as other police officers and bystanders watched, according to the report.

Yeah, no matter who the hell you are (white, black, asian, etc.), if you pull this crap on an officer, then you better be ready for a mug shot! :bonk:

Excerpt: (for your information, RonM)
Supporters including Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson called the arrest an outrageous act of racial profiling. Public interest increased when a photograph surfaced of the handcuffed Gates being escorted off his porch amid three officers, two white and one black.
Cambridge police moved to drop the disorderly conduct charge on Tuesday — without apology, but calling the case "regrettable."
That didn't end the national debate: Some said Gates was responsible for his own arrest because of his response to Crowley, while others said Gates was justified to yell at the officer.
Obama's criticism of the police only added fuel to the racial debate.
Meanwhile, the police union and fellow officers, black and white, rallied around Crowley, a decorated officer who in 1993 tried to give lifesaving mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to Reggie Lewis, a black Boston Celtics player who collapsed at practice. Lewis could not be revived.
Crowley, 42, had been selected to be a police academy instructor on how to avoid racial profiling.
A multiracial group of officers and union officials stood with Crowley on Friday at a news conference to show support and to ask Obama and Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick, who is black, to apologize for their comments. Patrick had called Gates' arrest "every black man's nightmare."

Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson = media heat seeking idiots.

As to the differences between the professor’s and the cops’ version of events, I confess I’ve been wary of taking Henry Louis Gates at his word ever since, almost two decades back, the literary scholar compared the lyrics of the rap group 2 Live Crew to those of the Bard of Avon. “It’s like Shakespeare’s ‘My love is like a red, red rose,’ ” he declared, authoritatively, to a court in Fort Lauderdale.
As it happens, “My luv’s like a red, red rose” was written by Robbie Burns, a couple of centuries after Shakespeare. Oh, well. Sixteenth-century English playwright, 18th-century Scottish poet: What’s the diff? Evidently being within the same quarter-millennium and right general patch of the North-East Atlantic is close enough for a professor of English and Afro-American Studies appearing as an expert witness in a court case. Certainly no journalist reporting Gates’s testimony was boorish enough to point out the misattribution.

Favorite excerpt from the link:
"He then told him, “I’ll speak with your mama outside.” Outside, Sergeant Crowley’s mama failed to show. But among his colleagues were a black officer and a Hispanic officer. Which is an odd kind of posse for what the Rev. Al Sharpton calls, inevitably, “the highest example of racial profiling I have seen.” "
"After noting that “‘Skip’ Gates is a friend” of his, President Obama said that “there is a long history in this country of African-Americans and Latinos being stopped by law enforcement disproportionately.” But, if they’re being “disproportionately” stopped by African-American and Latino cops, does that really fall under the category of systemic racism? "
"A black president, a black governor, and a black mayor all agree with a black Harvard professor that he was racially profiled by a white-Latino-black police team, headed by a cop who teaches courses in how to avoid racial profiling. The boundless elasticity of such endemic racism suggests that the “post-racial America” will be living with blowhard grievance-mongers like Professor Gates unto the end of time."

Well said Thai.
Obama is right about one thing, he said racism is well and alive in America. However, as we can see from the context of this story, racism is well and alive more so because of people like Gates, who are willing to pull the race card every chance they get.
Let assume that the context of the story is true--as Thai pointed out Gates hasn't disputed the police report. All I saw a private citizen acted like an idiot and willingly pushed the policemen patience. The policemen did end up losing their temper so shall he got what he asked for? At this point there is no racism involved since the samething could happen to any other private citizen whom willingly provoke the police. Gates was the one whom started all this. It's also worth pointing out that Gates isn't any ordinary citizen, he is a Harvard professor. In another word, he should have know better.
Yet, in this media sensationalism culture, people are hungry for a story. The media see a white policeman and a black citizen and the story is pulled out of context. All a sudden racism got involve and Gates quickly move to capitalize to on the story.

This is my favorite quote....almost two weeks later!
I am from Massachusetts and I am SO sick of this story. The fact that Obama invited them to the white house goes to show us all that this whole thing is blown way out of proportion! Thank you Thai for stating facts and laying it all on the table! And thank you Mr. Sharpton and Mr. Jackson for keeping racism alive (please note my sarcasm)...without it both of you would be broke, so keep making everything a race issue and never let anyone move on from it! :soapbox:
Notice that none of them finished their beers...what a waste!

that cracks me up. dont waste beer. wasn't it like bud light anyway?
I remember a few years ago two different scenarios same situation. A black man was in his car on a remote road sleeping so a white officer came to see what was going on. the black man reached for something after the officer said not to so the officer drew his pistol and shot him [im pretty sure he lived] the al sharpton and Jesse Jacksons of the world were quick to shout racist cop. later on in life a white man was stopped by a black cop similar situation went down but these same people said the officer was just doing his job. Both times they said this w/o knowing all of the facts of the case [and I don’t know them either but it shows you that racism is alive just not reverse racism]
Quite a few years ago there was a thing on CNN that cracks me up to this day. they were showing a police chase live where a black man was running from officers and they showed all of the white cops chasing him down and I cant remember who the commentator was but he started pulling the race card right away...once the white officers caught up with the black man they threw him to the ground and started being a little rough with him..This commentator was clearly excited about it so he can call them racist....until a black officer came up and joined in on the fight. The commentator was silent for a little bit
And the aboved mention for the health care plan…I agree this is a terrible terrible terrible plan but it will pass cause obama will make sure it passes. we are in his country now
