Angry Garbage

Hey guys,

What would you do if your neighbour kept putting his garbage, (which hasn't been picked up for 2 weeks), in front of your yard? I've done the obvious, and just put it back on his side, but he just put it back in front of my fence. Now, short of going over to his house, knocking on the door, and pulling a 300 on him, (Kick to the face, and yell "THis is Sparta!!"), What would you guys do?

This dude is starting to get on my nerves, but I'm trying to be a good neighbour........

I guess at this point I probably would knock on his door and just tell him to stop putting his garbarge in your yard. Just like that, I wouldnt yell or say much else yet. He will probably say ok, and if it stops great, but if after a few days it happens again, then its time to kick some ass!

Is it being placed ON YOUR property or on the road easement ? Is it because he's missing trash pickup ? Must be more details to it than you have said ?

Call the city or the waste management company who your city contracts about an abandoned garbage can. They'll come pick it up. Haha.

I've actually seen this happen. People put their cans out and go on vacation. If it is left out for more than 24 hours and there is a complaint then the garbage police come by in a pickup truck and confiscate the can. So we all do the neighborly thing and when we see a can left out we go roll it up next to the house so they don't get it swiped.

If you mean he is putting his actual trash in YOUR can then that's another ball game and calls for extreme measures, like talking to the guy and seeing what's up. I once had a neighbor who put a bunch of trash in my can early in the morning on trash day when I was heading out for work. I went and asked him what was up with that, not trying to be rude or anything (he was in his 80's and was a nice old man) and he said that the neighborhood had worked out an agreement once they went to one big auto loader can from the old rule where you'd put out multiples (and some people were being squeezed on space) that on garbage night you could put extra in a neighbor's can if it had room. They all just had to agree to wait until the last minute, but then they could check other cans and if there was space then go for it, because we aren't charged by weight. We just pay monthly for the can. So why not fill them all up each week and get our money's worth? The way he explained it made perfect sense.

Then he said that he had a recycling can that was only half full each week and there was no reason for anybody else to get one since it cost additional cash, so we were welcome to use it. We got a green waste can so he never had to and we'd share that one as well and I let the neighbors put green waste in whenever they want since it costs me like $8 a month and I can't ever fill it up with just grass and weeds.

To make a short story long, he ended up becoming my best friend, and we spent many weekends and evenings working on projects together like fixing the fence, painting, me helping him with a lightbulb, pruning our trees, or just talking about life. I found out that he had been a principal at an elementary school in SoCal for years and years, and at the time I moved here I was a student teacher and he helped me through every step of my career and after 5 years I became an administrator like him. I can remember going to his house to tell him I'd gotten tenured and he said "So what? Bad teachers want tenure and great teachers don't need it!" It was awesome. His funeral was one of the saddest things I've ever been through. I really miss that dude.

So I'm not saying you're going to be best friends with the guy, but funnier things have happened. I sure do miss my pal Bob, and it is funny that we started talking over a garbage can.

yeah thats what i would do. it makes sense to me.

i live in a townhouse and the ladies (i use the term ladies loosely) put their can in the little area between my garage and theirs. Where as i put mine in my driveway so its not in shared area. anyway, theirs kept blowing over on to my driveway so i would pick it up and put it back on their side of the garage and they finally stopped putting it there. no confrontations or any issues. i would just keep pushing it back over to his side of the fence. or take a dump on his porch.

similar problem here. We have a couple of bears that roam our neighborhood and get into the trash and my neighbors will leave rotten meat and other food in their cans and then leave for days at a time to go work out of town. The bears tear up their garbage all over the street every week. Then they aren't around to clean it up so guess who gets to do it?

I'm trying to think of a good way to end this because I've told them several times, but since they're gone and don't see it for themselves the problem basically doesn't exist to them. I can't leave trash all over the street all week long waiting for them to get back because the wind will blow it everywhere.

I like the dump on the porch idea, but I don't think the rest of my neighbors would think that's cool. My friend (jokingly) said I should take the spark plugs out of their car and throw lag bolts down the holes but I'm not a vindictive guy and don't want to get arrested for anything. Any ideas?

The classic potato in the tailpipe is pretty funny, and harmless. Or peanut butter under the car door handle, also very funny and pretty harmless. LOL

First i would try talking, God knows that doesn't always work but it's worth a try. I would also call a city to see what can be done about it. If that doesn't work, pick one of the above mentioned revenge options
